Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I'm so excited! Someone is interested in picking up my goats on Monday and keeping them as PETS. And someone is coming tonight to buy a trio of chickens. Hopefully they both show. Also, 2 people want to look at the truck I have for sale. But I'm thinking I may want to keep it. Craigslist was hoppin today for me!

Hi all! I haven't been on here enough to have made friends, but I had an experience that I really need to share in hopes that others will not have to go through it!
This spring we decided that we were going to add a few laying hens to our farm. I had been researching chickens, coops, and all that goes with that for MONTHS! I found a guy in Middleton that builds coops and was really excited to meet him and talk to him about my ideas. He was very pleasant to work with, interested in my ideas and was willing to build me the coop that I wanted. My family and I spent a total of 6 hours at his workshop before we got all the details worked out - with plenty of time looking at and chasing chickens! I loved the experience. He started work on the coop, saying it would take 10-14 days for him to be done. So I ordered my started birds with that in mind. The coop took over three weeks to get done and the run wasn't ready when the coop was, so he sent us home with one of his runs, promising delivery of the run we ordered in a week. Two months, several e-mails and a leaking coop later, he stopped out to deliver the (wrong) run and take a look at what we were having trouble with on the coop. He admitted to using sub-par materials on parts of the coop, that the roof was in need of an overhang, and that the nest box needed re-roofing as well. The poop drawer needed a bit of re-fitting to slide better. He made plans with us to be back Thursday or Friday of that week to make the fixes and deliver the correct run. That was more than a month ago - pushing two months, actually. Now, we're quickly approaching winter and I'd really like to get things shored up! I've tried contacting him and he has not responded at all. I told him that if I didn't hear from him I would flag him on Craig's List and let my friends on the chicken forums know about his (lack of) customer service. So, there it is; a warning, and a bit of advice - check references. It seriously never crossed my mind, and I know better. His name is Jeff Jicinsky and has a shop in Middleton.

Sorry to interrupt your flow of lovely, chatty posts with this.
Welcome

sorry that you are having problems right from the start. Not sure if you can post pictures of the coop and the areas that need some help but if you can I am sure that everyone here could give you some ideas how to make the needed repairs.

lilliesllamas: So sorry to hear of your rough start to chicken life....I am beating the chicken fun hass made of for some of the frustration? And good idea to put the word out on here to save others the same headache!!! Welcome to BYC!

Good evening everyone! Got another 140 bales of good hay into the barn this afternoon. I think I may be set for the winter...sheesh, my hands and arms are burning. Darn Nigerian goat was out AGAIN! I picked him up and dropped him over the fence. I couldnt see anywhere he was getting out. I guess I will have to take a look when it is light.

Took Commander for a really short ride tonight. I wanted to see how his lameness was progressing. (and I HAD to deburr him!) He seemed fine at the walk. When I asked him for a running walk he seemed like he had a little "hitch." I will ask DD20 to put him on a lunge line this weekend and take a look. He was really nervous to be out by himself after dark and after being off for two weeks. I am hoping to get back to riding him regularly again next week.

My hen SS has hatched yet another brood! We were checking out where we were going to put the hay and I saw her sitting on a nest. She hopped off and had a whole mess of chicks under her...no unhatched eggs either! My friend that was helping was amazed at the variety of the babies! Mostly chipmunk types but also various solids. Of course she HAD to hold one so she reached out before I could get a count or a pic...tomorrow. I let her hold it because she tried to grab one of Tophat's babies and she launched at her! She was pretty surprised that she attacked cause she can pick all of hers up. I told her she would....didnt believe me I guess!

One hen that I havent seen in a while is Road Runner. I am wondering if something got her or if she will show up any day with more babies in tow? IT has been a very fertile year here on my farm for sure!
This weekend we are driving to Thorpe to go to a wedding. It should be pretty fun. The bride said "dont dress up cause you are going to get dirty anyhow." I think the highlight will be the barstool races. I saw a video of this and it is hysterical. I will try to remember my camera!

Well I guess I better get to bed. I am cooking tomorrow and it is a birthday so there may be lots to cook for. It will probably be my last day of cooking...the head cook has a bug up her arse and I cant say that I will miss working Fridays.

Nighties chickenfolk--sweet dreams! TerriOwhoreallyneedstogetthesestinkyquailoutofthelivingroom!

GF Chocolate cheesecake is in the oven. I have a party to go to tomorrow night at the Dean's house. I hope I do not give everyone my cold.... I have been coughing up gravel all afternoon..... and I sound like Marge Simpson.

Contacted the film makers of Mad City Chickens to see if we could show the movie... and they said YES! So now I have that project to work on.....

Ok, I have to go out and look at the Buck my DD's BF shot today. BBL.....

The guy that came and got the chickens told me an interesting story. He bought some birds from a big breeder around here. apparently she provides a lot of birds to 4H kids. The birds from her got lethargic, one leg seemed to go stiff, and they died within days. He has tried calling her with no response. Maybe his chickens were carriers and her birds died from that. Its scary either way! Hope the birds I just sold him don't drop dead!
