Witnessed A Vandalism CLOSE-UP (UPDATE Post# 116)

I highly doubt they did any of this. The police here have a very nonchalant attitude, are friends with the local parents, etc. I don't think they go out of their way to do anything. I told two cops that metal and plastic pieces were flying in my hair and hitting me on the face, and no one even asked if I was hurt! I wasn't hurt, but shouldn't they have at least asked? I'm really just disgusted about the whole thing.

Keep your receipts when you fix your mailbox (as I expect you will.)

Once a fellow got very angry with his wife, drove off in her car and took out our mailbox and some other stuff, with the intent of messing up her car. We had no idea who did it but were informed by police later. If we'd had the receipt a year later when he got out of jail, he'd have paid us back. We'd only spent a few bucks so hadn't bothered.

That is just disgusting!

Have you and your neighbor considered contacting the FBI about this? Granted, it's a minor issue in the sound of things, but if the local police don't want to do much, then maybe look into going after this for the federal crime.

Yeah, I will save it. But of course it's really not the cost of the mailbox that I care about; it's just the principle of the whole thing. I shouldn't have to go down there in the hot sun, messing around with a mailbox on a stand that's now half tipped over, that most of my neighbors will probably just leave that way because they are lazy.... know what I mean? It just makes me mad, they should come out and replace them. Even if the kids really "aren't allowed" to come near the property, then have the darn parents come out and put new ones up!!

A perfect example why the 2nd amendment is so important. Sounds like your local police were protecting the wrong people, until they found out how widespread the damages were. Harder to keep it under their hats with 3 towns involved. Take care!

That's not up to me, it's up to the Post Office. The cop said it's the post office who has to decide whether to press felony charges, and he said they never do.

I can't imagine calling the FBI about this anyway, I'm pretty sure they have bigger things to worry about, but I appreciate your sympathy.

Some carriers will deliver your mail if you just temporarily have the mailbox sitting on the ground. But they don't have to. I wish you luck in getting them back up. In the meantime you can go to the post office and pick up your mail at least. Wish I had more helpful advice than that.

Yep! Make SURE you are listed as a witness and also as one of the victims. They will send you a letter asking you if you want to give a statement to the judge. They sent my mother a paper that she filled out, it just asks what happend and how you feel about it, and what would YOU like to see happen...etc...
She didnt have to testify in court, but the judge got to read her statement.
So make SURE you are listed on that report, and you actually might get your money back from this too.... my mother did. The judge made the kid pay my mother in cash at the courthouse.

Laura, i would call the postmaster. See what he has to say about the whole thing. Explain that SEVERAL mail boxes are down and now you cant even get mail..etc...
I would also recommend to him that they press charges on these kids because of the VIOLENT nature of ALL the crimes they commited that night...etc...
