I have always thought that you have to drop a Baby wood duck from a tall height to the ground to break something in their throat that blocks them from eating. That's why the jump from high nests. I know people who always drop theirs and they do fine
 
Huh...that's the first I've ever heard of that one...the whole dropping thing is part of their natural design but from what I have read it is not all that necessary for them to actually make the jump...

From what I understand, they make the jump because the mama laid her eggs in a safe hole up in a tree, they are made to take the fall but the fall doesn't do anything special for them...at least that's what I have gathered.

They drop from high nests because their mother will use what she gets and they have no choice. Predators are fewer at higher elavations in swampland

I've heard that alot and It made sense to me since we have tons of them over here and I've noticed that the always land neck first every time when they jump from the nest. And the ones that hatch from our lower wood duck boxes usually don't live very long. I don't know if it actually BREAKS something in them but I think it might be necessary to get them started. Not 100% sure tho
 
I'm getting a little concerned, maybe I should stop telling people I have an incubator because something totally unexpected just happened. .

Right in the middle of my first wood ducks hatch my dad just brought home 17 wood duck eggs from a tree that was removed this afternoon(it was damaged in the same storm, dead, hollow, and about to fall in an area full of people)

They are all at different stages of development, some don't seem to have air sacks and all have very small ones(no clue whats going on there), should I let them settle before putting them in the bator(I sorta have to wait anyway, the other one is still in the middle of hatching!)

I am thinking I am going to contact the rehaber....

Legally speaking you should contact a rehabber. To legally have wood ducks or other migratory birds or there eggs you should have bought them from a licensed seller that would provide you with a 3-186 form stating that you bought them legally and they weren't taken from the wild. Sounds like these knew ones haven't been incubated yet.
 
Really? Well, rehaber it is, no problem there....

How can I go about getting my own license, it sounds like something worth doing...

I am above the age of 18...I don't really need one for anything special just wood ducks and mandarins and such....

Why didn't anyone tell me this before...I feel really stupid...I was getting excited about owning wood ducks...
