I've had dogs for over 30 years but we have been dog less since last Sept when we had to have or 11 year old Standard Poodle Sawyer put to sleep because of a tumor in his head. We are now awaiting the birth of our new Standard Poodle. Momma poodle is due March 11th and puppy will be coming to his/her new home in early May. (Not that I'm anxious or counting the days. Ok....yes I am! ) I have been researching dog foods and I'm overwhelmed at how many brands there are now. It's crazy!. I want to buy a good quality dog food but don't want to have to sell my plasma to pay for it. And before anyone recommends a raw diet......no way. I hate dealing with raw meat....nope....nada...no way.......ain't gonna do it. I make my husband cut up raw chicken. I know I know.....I'm a big sissy. I don't mind cleaning up chicken poop, cat poop, dog poop, rabbit poop.....you get the picture. I'm not afraid of gross stuff......except raw chicken meat.
Soooooo how about it? Give me your opinions on dog food.

Thanks

My vet recently sent out an article about grain free dog foods and that they actually are not good for dogs and can cause health problems, the exception being if your dog has a genuine allergy to a specific grain.

Personally we feed Purina, which for us is milled/manufactured locally so we feel it is fresh and we are supporting our local economy.

I suspect you will get many many answers to your question.

We too choose to only feed dry feed, seems to help keep the teeth cleaner and the breath better.

When I did have a dog with special dietary needs we found that Earthborn feeds offer some really good options with and without corn or certain grains, as well as using alternative proteins. Many large manufacturers use chicken as a protein source, but if you look at foods with things like fish or venison or lamb you will find that you may be able to give adequate protein with more or less fat and more or less oils etc. for your dog's specific needs. (large breed vs. small breed or old vs. young and active vs. still growing etc.).

Some of it is trial by error as well. Good luck with your new pup. It certainly is exciting and I'd be counting down days as well.

Good to know as
grain free seems to be the "it" thing right now. I agree with feeding dry dog food . It's much easier and less messy also.

For my puppies I feed Authority large breed puppy (chicken formula). It is Pet smart store brand.
For the adults it is Kirkland chicken and rice formula.

We tried feeding Taste Of The Wild to my now old guy when he was a puppy. He and his brother both suffered bone pain while on it.
Don't get me wrong it is an awesome dog food. I do still but small bags to use as treats.
Mine just couldn't handle that high of protein as a staple.I

Edited because autocorrect ain't

I had trouble finding a food that my sweet Sable would eat. Authority got her eating.

it's not the cheapest at $40 for 34# but certainly not the most expensive either.

OH and my son feeds his dog Nutro chicken and rice formula.
