World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to keep my grubby paws off mine. Candled. Got either 19 or 21 (two are maybes) started out of 29 (the new bunch) and still 10 (with one a possible early quitter) out of 18 in the first bunch. I am NOT going to candle again till day 18 for the older bunch (Tuesday) since they will be going into lockdown then :D But still...shipped eggs, and these are doing amazingly well so far! Not counting any chickens before they hatch either, though.

I wonder if some of the breeders on here are willing to sell chicks, I'll have to try in the spring. It doesn't seem like hardly anyone is working with the silver laced cochin bantams. And I reaiceved mine from Arkansas to Minnesota, so not too terrible, but still quite the journey.

I can never keep my hands off of mine. I start candling on day 3 and I'll candle a bunch of them every night thorugh out their development and then I candle every egg on days 7, 10, and 18. I mean it doesn't affect their development, the cooling period is just like mother hen getting some food or water and it's so fun to watch them develop. In fact, my best hatch (95%) was the one in which I candled most since it was my first!

I don't touch until day 18 when I remove the turner. I then candle and remove only the clear ones. That way for sure they don't get thrown out if they're fertile and I don't have as many chances to drop eggs.

They hatchability of shipped eggs also depends on how they are packaged. securely packaged eggs do better than those free floating in styrofoam peanuts.

That's kinda how I feel...if they were with a broody, she'd be up and down a bit. I don't sit and look at them long, either, or handle them excessively or roughly. Just a quick peek to say hi and see what's up. :D

I have been lucky with shipped eggs....everyone I have bought them from has packaged them beautifully and I've been totally pleased with the care the sellers have taken in sending these little potential babies :D

I feel that mine were packaged great, and the seller has tons of happy buyers with amazing hatch rates. I guess I just had bad luck with shipping. The seller can't control the shipping, I mean look that the sorting, boxes are dropped however many feet and such, so I don't blame them, I'm just disappointed.

Well things haven't gone acording to plan. I was going to buy 2 large Natureform incubators but the guy selling them has giving me some trouble picking them up. We went on Monday to take a look and I asked if I could pay by paypal so I could use my credit card. He said he would ask his wife about it. Got an e-mail saying it was fine as long as I paid the paypal cost to recieve the money. So I payed and asked if I could pick them up. That day they were busy so he said we could come get them on Wednesday. Well he ended up getting back late and didn't want to do it even though we had already borrowed a trailor from someone. So we did manage to get one and will get the other one today. But we still need to get them set up and warmed up so I will probably not get the eggs in until Friday. So it seems that a week after everyone else is a little late for me to stay in this hatchalong. Well now that I think about it I did get some eggs from a lady that had them already incubating under some silkies. They looked to be about a week along or so, so maybe they will hatch around the 12th. But the other 30 dozen won't go in until Friday.

What? I coulda sworn I posted here this morning!

Anyway, I vote you stay in, all be it a little late, LOL, because you're the most glamorous incubator of all!

I just candled my eggs, out of 12 set, I have 10 going strong (one I dropped thermostat on and the other quit early) If 10 make it to the end, that'd be great!

Well I feel like a celebrity now! I hope the person I am getting eggs from has the 30 dozen. I was going to get like 8 dozen from someone but their chickens quit laying because they had changed their feed. I talked to the guy I am getting the larger # of eggs from and he said we wasn't sure if he will have 30 or not. I hope he does. He must sell a lot of eggs because I spoke to him on Thursday and he had 60 dozen so I guess he sold most of those in a week.
