World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

I made the Pot Bator. An old metal crock pot(non electric) that was wrapped in bubble wrap for insulation and heated with an incandescant lightbulb. The humidity comes from an cup of water in the center of the pot. The eggs are placed in the bottom. I hatched several chicks and ducklings in it, too!

I love seeing all the inventive ways people make a working incubator. I have long days ahead of me for a while though, and wouldn't be around to turn the eggs more then twice a day as best...

October 12 is smack in the middle of my busy time of the year I wont be home for the week before or the week after and maybe not the ones on either side of them! (Last could out 31 days I think ill be home about 10 to 15 days!!)

I really hope you can find one on the cheap in time, Nomibear! I'm almost always home, except one or two hours at a time, and constantly monitoring and adjusting my home made incubator. I don't think it would be a good option for anyone who isn't home alot

I don't have a good spot in the house to keep it in that doesn't fluxuate with the heat of the day, so I'm always adjusting, opening and closing holes. It's worked so far, but it means 3 weeks of constant chick sitting!

fingers crossed that you find one soon! You do have time ;)

Quote: Nomibear--making an incubator is fairly simple; the first time takes a little time. 4-5 hours at most, an hour for some folks. ( I took 5 hours). If you think you are planning to make one, start NOW and get it setup and stablized. THis can take a long time depending on the specific design. TUrning--two times if you must, three is better, even if one side is a shorter time than the other, the next day will make up for it. Hope you will be able to join in.

I'm really not brave enough to build my own;( I also wouldn't want to risk the eggs by only being able to turn them twice a day. I would feel better working with one I can set up and go. I have a neighbor who had one of the big cabinet type of Incubators. He said he could hatch eggs out for a fee, but I would rather experience this for myself. Something to share with my kids... I'm still looking for one. Haven't given up yet.

glad to see so much interest in the hatch!

I'm working on a BYC Page for the hatchalong and I'll post the link in my signature when it is done.

Wow, I was looking for this thread, but it got buried!. Hope nobody minds a bump!

Gotta figure out how to hatch by October 12 and set another batch on October 10th??? With only one small home made bator, LOL. Wanna do the Halloween hatch too!
