World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

Well, it's early yet, cochins! I mean if the others just hatched, there is still good hope!

Gosh aussie pete, I sure hope you find what caused the trouble!

Hi everyone!
Glad to hear these hatches are mostly going well, congratulations!! Those of you who have lost eggs, I hope things go better on your next round.
I'm a newbie (both on the forum and with hatching eggs) and I happen to have eggs due today. This is my first hatch. Eight eggs from my flock of mostly Sussex are due today or tomorrow (I started them at dinnertime so technically I'm still on day 20), and then I have 12 Araucanas due on Thursday. I'm suffering!!! No movement, no pips, nothing! I candled them at not-so regular intervals, and a few were indeterminate but others had easy to see development and good air sacs. I know I have to wait (and breathe), but it's just so hard, especially when some of you have so much movement and peeping going on. These first 8 eggs are quite small, perhaps there's not much room left for the chicks to be moving around. The Araucana eggs are almost twice the size. Of the Araucanas, some I couldn't see through when candling, but those I could also looked great. I hope I'm on the right track and within a day or so I'll be posting pics along with the rest of you!
Cheers,
Tamara

Just candied my eggs I set on the 11th and all but three seem to have veining and I seen a few heart beats, in including the ones from the refrigerator, my main concern is that they seem to all developing next to the air sac. I have never noticed this before, but it is only my second time using the auto Turner all of my other hatches have always been hand turned.

Using an auto turner will tend to keep the yolk further "up" in the egg, closer to the air cell. This is where you will see development 1st.

Tamara, I've never seen the eggs move before either, so don't fret on that (I am a total hypocrite, I have two Serama eggs on lockdown right now that I desperately want to hatch, but they're not moving and I can't check on them, and I don't hear anything (and they have 2 more days to go

)) Yah, even so, I'm going nuts! They were fine last night when I put them in lockdown, it hasn't even been a full day and I'm freaking out,

But really, it should be ok, should be.....

Sorry I haven't checked-in in a while. My 2 year old has messed up my laptop, but it seems to be working today (at least for now). I ended up with 6 silkie/silikie mix chicks, and 4 large breed chicks, 3 BR/BR mix and one EE mix. One of the silkie mix chicks came from a big egg, but must have had a silkie daddy. It has dark feathery legs, and dark skin around its rump area, but lighter skin everywhere else. The last chick hatched on Friday. I did have one chick not hatch and another that hatched but some of its yolk leaked and it died the next day. I will try to get some picks up later.

Well, my one little one out of my second half of my setting is still hanging in there. This baby needs an awesome name, because she/he has been an amazing fighter. Firstly, because of my temp issues, nothing was pipping at all, and every baby was dying in the egg. I literally hatched both Autumn (who is doing GREAT) and this little one out. But this one was more of a challenge since the membrane wanted to bleed... and bleed... every time I tried, even after 8 hours or more. I wrapped the egg in damp paper towel and waited till last night late (early this morning) and when that baby was still peeping and breathing even with a big open place in that egg, I went ahead and gently hatched her out. Please don't do this at home, kids! I know it was probably not the best thing to do, but I could not let the whole setting die. She is peeping and starting to try to get around the incubator now, and getting better and better at moving around, so things are looking good so far.

Congrats again to everyone who has new little ones, and condolances to those who have had bad hatches.Believe me, I know both sides of this. All we can do is do our best and to try again if things go south. And we enjoy the living ones we get. :) My new little one is almost all yellow/white, too... not sure yet what color this one will end up. Will post pics once she is on her feet solidly.

This newest little one has a name, so she HAS to make it now. :D Her name is Asteria, who was one of the Amazon women who fought Herakles. :D I think it fits, plus it's a pretty name. It means "of the sky" (chickens can fly, after all)

Aww, I think I'm only going to get one hatch as well. One of the eggs, I can see inside the pip and it hasn't moved in hours, completely still. But the other one, I hear peeps from, so I'm hoping it will hatch! It was 20 degrees hotter today, and I was outside building my coop (still, ugh!) and I think the incubator got too hot :( My first incubator is more sensitive to ambient air temps, where as the new one is way more stable. I put those two in the old one because I needed to up the humidity for them, and I had new eggs in the new one. So.. Ugh! I didn't think I'd have this problem, and I so wanted both chicks, but if I get this one, I'll be very happy!!

Well, one trip to a hot and steamy bathroom later means that the four (best guess at this stage 2 girls, one boy, one undecided - so I'm guessing boy!) are out of the 'bator and into the brooder. Those were, coincidentally Eggs #1-4, numbered on order of laying, oldest being #1. Egg #6 is now rocking very gently so there might still be a chance. Haven't seen anything from #5 yet.
The update is - No real change.

Confirmed 2 boys, 2 girls in the brooder and 2 eggs still in the bator. I know it's only Day 22 but I'm starting to think I've got what I'm going to get.

Still, I don't need the bator for anything so they can sit there for a while longer. You never know!

I'll post some shots of the chicks later on.
