World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

Aw, so sorry Cochins, that's the hard part, you can't know what it is you should do :( I lost one yesterday, one of only two surviving Serama chicks, and I really wanted them to be born. I don't know what went wrong, just didn't make it. So far at least, the second one is still alive, I can hear it!

Hoping that all will go well with your remaining Serama chick!

I think he hatched chipmunks, no?

Too cute!

Thanks cochins, I'm gonna need all the luck I can get! I really want this chick bad! But now it's going to be alone until Friday when I get some chicks in. I'm a little worried about putting such a little one in with my leghorn chicks...?

I have his little body in the incubator still, praying for a miracle but I know that he's gone. He's just looks so perfect. Fully formed, yolk sac absorbed and everything, like I said, if I were to do it 2 minutes sooner while he was still alive, he may have made it... I don't know why I can't get over this guy.. It's not like it's the first time I've lost a chick, I've lost lots of chicks over the years, but just two minutes sooner and I could have had him, I can't get over it. If I were to have woken up a little bit earlier this morning, maybe it would have gone better...

I do love my two other chicks though, they are adorable and average out to $27.50 a piece, hahaha.
Awwww I am so sorry... I have been through the same situation in my hatches lately. I have one gorgeous 9 day old baby in my brooder and a 2 day old still in the incubator which I ended up hatching out completely, for the very same reasons. You can't turn back time, and please don't beat yourself up over the little guy. I would say for myself, that if I have babies that look like they're not going to give it a try, and they are still moving at day 19, 20, 21... I'm going to pip and potentially hatch them out. Some folks will say "well, they were not supposed to hatch for some reason" Yeah, maybe not, but I'd rather give them a chance and have them give up after, than for them to never have had a a chance at all.

I wish I'd been online sooner...I'd have cheered you on while you pipped and hatched that little one. RIP little chickie.

GCChickenMan - What did breed did you hatch? They sure are adorable.

They're Cream Legbars. The first ones I've tried hatching from my own flock. Handy that they can be sexed as soon as they're dry and lovely blue eggs too (although that takes a little longer).

What are yours, Cochins? (I typed that and then thought "Am I answering my own question there?"). They are obviously worth a few bucks anyway.

I have a story of a lone chick. It's a long story but I only had a few eggs to start out with and the air sacs were pretty much destroyed so only one made it to lockdown. That one hatched, but I couldn't get anymore chicks. I looked around, but couldn't find them anywhere at the time. So the little guy took to me, he never heard the chirping of his siblings, or get the opputunity to see another one like him so I was the closest thing there was. He was so sweet, I would set him down and go around the kitchen with him following me everywhere. He would snuggle in my hand for hours and he loved my hair. If I ever got near the cage, he tried ever so hard to get out and come see me. If I would open the door, he would jump right into my hand. He's still my friendliest chicken hahaha, still follows me and still loves to snuggle and have his back rubbed. The only thing is that he would cry and cry at the top of his lungs when ever I wasn't there, so I carried him with me just about everywhere I went. Sleeping was also a nightmere. I had his cage right next to my bed, but that wasn't good enough, he had to be snuggled in with me, but I was afraid of crushing him or getting popped on, so he was stuck for nights with a little stuffed dog to snuggle with.

Yes you are answering your own question, hahaha. They are cochins, but not just cochins. They are silver laced cochin bantams, there are only a handful of people across the country working on them. It took me forever to find that breeder in Arkansas. I contacted everyone on the cochin's breeder directory for silver laced and almost all of them said they gave up on the silver laced and sold their birds. What a shame, they are so beautiful. I think I'm going to try and order more eggs, as I'll bet anything that I would be lucky enough for a hen and a rooster.

Thanks! I always help if they truly can't hatch on their own as often you do get really nice chicks that would have died elsewise. Though over the years I have come across a couple that weren't meant to be, like one I hatched out only had one leg. I made him a little peg leg and he able to get around, I thought he'd be the coolest rooster alive, but one day he fell into the water dish and couldn't get out with only one leg. He was face up so he didn't drown, but died of hypothermia. Poor little guy.

Wow. I had to google them and they are gorgeous. I hope you do get a hen and a roo. You could use some better luck.

I just got some bantams (snap purchase when I saw the parents) but they're just Mille Fleur Barbu d'Uccles, nothing as fancy as your cochins.

I say go for more eggs. You can recoup the outlay by selling your own next year!
