World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

hehehe, I have been candling morning and night daily! Since I now only 4 eggs, I can have them candled and turned in under a minute. I can narrow down when those other 2 embryos died to within a 6 hour period. I just use a simple little flashlight, nothing special. Though, on a sad spot, I believe my nail polish embryo has passed away tonight...

Hello everyone It has been a pretty busy week and I am just catching up on every ones posts from the past few days. It's so exciting to hear how all the little eggs are doing! I started with two duckling eggs. One of the eggs failed a couple of days ago. On the bright side, my remaining egg "Buster" seems to be developing quite nicely and has been very active during our recent hot weather

. He is due to hatch on Columbus Day, October 8th. However, my last duckling was a few days late. I will post more updates soon. I will be thrilled with a healthy hatch regardless of the day Good luck everyone!

How exciting! I didn't know about world egg day, but by coincidence that's when mine will hatch. They seem to be doing well, except for my Favorelles. I think my roo is shooting blanks.

. It is always sad to lose one. I am really hoping that Buster has a safe hatch. Buster is a pekin/mallard mix. I hatched the dad(mallard drake) about eight months ago. My avatar is a photograph of Baby Shamus when he was just a few days old. I was so surprised to discover that my female Pekin, Snow White, and Shamus had fertile eggs. I can't wait to see the result! What kind of eggs are you incubating?

I'm incubating Silver Laced Cochin Bantams, it took me forever to find eggs, many breeders have given up on them so they have become somewhat rare. I have never really taken breeding seriously before, but I plan to with these guys. Only 4 are developing so I might have to go ahead and order more eggs so that I can have a few birds to choose from for my starting breeding flock, they are just so darn expensive. I'm really excited to start this breeding project, I have hatched out our cochin eggs many times but they were never anything special.

And I know it's sad to lose them, I did this experiment in which I carefully removed the top half of the egg shell exposing the clear inner membrane and then covered that membrane with clear nail polish in an attempt to watch an embryo develop. The little guy would be on day 12 today, but I just candled and I believe he passed away. I knew it might not work from the beginning, but once he started developing, I really got my hopes up.

The Silver Laced Cochin Bantams sound wonderful Looking forward to seeing the chicks! It is really hard to see them develop and then lose them. My younger egg was about eight days behind Buster. I knew it was a gamble since I found the egg in the duck's nest soaking in broken egg yolk. My ducks have developed the bad habit of egg eating. I removed two eggs in hope of saving them. I will be thrilled if Buster makes a safe hatch. Looking forward to hearing about your Bantams progress! Good luck

Well my egg search has gotten better. I now have 12 dozen quail eggs and will pick up 10 dozen guinea eggs on Thursday. Friday I will be getting about 5 dozen Ameraucana mix eggs and if the person's Buff orfingtons have started laying again I should have 6 or 7 dozen from them. And then I will have to see if the person with the BR and RIR chickens got any eggs. I still need to pick up the other incubator, the one I picked up last week needs a part for the turner. I hope my husband can get it tomorrow. My eggs seem to be coming along fine. I have 8 silkie mix eggs, 5 regular sized mixed chicken eggs, 3 guinea eggs (but 2 I don't think are fertile, I need to check again) and I think 1 duck egg, but it might be a chicken egg, not really sure. I'm not exactly sure when they will hatch because they were already developing under some silkie hens when I got them. So I hope all or at least some hatch around the same time as everyone else.

Patiently (or not so patiently) awaiting my Friday hatch date for these first 8 eggs. Gah. I am pretty anxious to see how many pip and hatch this time. They all looked good at last candling, so I am hopeful. Not going to candle the second half of my hatch until after these first ones hatch, obviously. I don't have external pips anywhere yet, so I am opening the 'bator to quickly turn the younger eggs and then I get out of there.

Come on Friday! Come on, babies!!

Wow, I'm curious cmfarm, what are your plans with all the chicks?

I just candled a couple of eggs in different locations of the incubator, and they seem to be developing the same, and are at a great stage to view! You can make them out squiggling around, with good blood vessels everywhere. Things will start to get tight for them from now on though, hope they enjoy their space while they can!!!
