World Egg Day Hatchalong!(October 12, 2012 is World Egg Day!)

Keep opening the incubator to turn them twice a day. Thats what I just did for my staggered hatch last week, I was opening the incubator even with the external pips and every single egg hatched and none ended up shrinked wrap. I find turning too important after my one hatch. Last year, I got sick and didn't turn for about 3-4 days. All 5 hatched, but one chick hatched with only one leg (the other just wasn't there), and another appeared to have a deformed head. They both past away. I was really hopeful for the one with one leg, I made it a little peg and it was able to get around, but one day it fell in the water dish and with only one leg, couldn't get out. That was probably the only chick I had ever cried about, I tried to revive him even through I knew it was imposible, he would have been a partridge cochin rooster. So anyways, I haven't had any other deformaties ever and I hatch a lot of chicks, so I assume it was from the lack of turning.

If I cannot get to the farm store to pick up another bator I will do that. I don't want to end up ruining this hatch...it's gone really well so far :D I was thinking, too...since these are Serama, I am not going to be raising the humidity up to 70% anyway. I think my last failed hatch was due to raising it too much at lockdown. I'll go with 60% or so, which hopefully will be safe for everyone. Plan A is the second bator, Plan B will be to hatch with 60% humidity and to go ahead and quickly turn the newer eggs as usual

My incubators are small, so keeping the humidity up is pretty easy, The humidity goes down only maybe at most 5% while I'm messing around in there, then right back up in 30 seconds after closing. I was thinking I'd have a staggered hatch this time around, but all my eggs died (not the world hatch day ones) ... well, one seems to still be alive, but I don't have much hope for it because it's stuck to the air sack. So when my other eggs come in next week, I'll have only one egg if that, which is on a different schedule.

I'll try to candle my eggs tonight, they've been looking VERY good last time I looked. So I'm expecting 10 chicks :) 'Course anything could happen... oh geepers! Gotta stop counting my chickens

I've been dry incubating since the begining. Humidity was 20%. Last night I added some water, now it is at 60%. Should this cause a problem?
It shouldn't be too big of a deal, are you watching their air sac development? Thats what you need to look for as far as what your humidity should be, if you go to google images and type in "chicken egg air sac development" you should see some picture of how large the sair sac should be and that will dedermine where your humidity should be. But that 60% isn't going to harm your embryos in the mean time.

Hello everyone:) It has been a pretty busy week and I am just catching up on every ones posts from the past few days. It's so exciting to hear how all the little eggs are doing! I started with two duckling eggs. One of the eggs failed a couple of days ago. On the bright side, my remaining egg "Buster" seems to be developing quite nicely and has been very active during our recent hot weather

. He is due to hatch on Columbus Day, October 8th. However, my last duckling was a few days late. I will post more updates soon. I will be thrilled with a healthy hatch regardless of the day:) Good luck everyone!
