Would you do this to save your friend??

Bull Sharks, while one of the more aggressive species of shark, still do not hunt for humans. We aren't their favorite meal or anywhere close to it. Carcharhinus leucas can be highly aggressive and territorial, and will attack animals in their territory. They are more common in shallow water, and thus come in contact with humans more often. This guy was most likely in the wrong place at the wrong time. The best thing to remember is when you enter the water you are going into THEIR territory. It's much like someone coming into your yard.

Ok...I'm getting off my soapbox now...just didn't want any misconceptions about sharks to spread.

Depends on the situation, and even then I couldn't say for sure. Generally though, I find it hard to react and freeze if I am in certain situations, or if someone else has taken control of the situation, but am much calmer or able to act when someone else needs help. If some guy started decking me, I'm likely to completely freeze mentally and physically. If a guy starts hitting his girlfriend in a parking lot...he'd likely find an angry little tick of fury latched onto him. For whatever reason, a human purposefully harming another seems to be the quickest way to activate the primal rage function, and thus the easiest situation for me to act in. Hulk SMASH.

If a shark attack happened like a chess game though, I'm not as quick to do things for others as I used to be. I'd have a hard time, for instance, jumping in to help a sociopath when I have a husband waiting at home.

In the interview they had been filming and had splashed around a lot, also had caught some fish. Probably a mixture of blood and activity.

Exactly. And this happens often, but it should never be considered the sharks fault. The shark is simply doing what sharks do. The next time a shark sneaks up and attacks you while you're sleeping safely in bed, then we'll talk about sharks hunting people.

As a kid raised in Florida we were taught by our parents to be very aware of where you where at and what you were doing when out in the woods or in the water. I had a hammerhead shark nail me when I was thigh deep in the ocean. The young shark simply knocked me in the leg with his head. My brother thumped the small shark with his foot and it swam away. I was not bitten but developed a rash where the shark had grazed me. My RN mother took me to the doctor who put me on antibiotics. I remember the doctor telling me the bacteria sharks carried could be dangerous.

Several months later while walking a trail with a friend we had a gator charge us. I had no idea how fast those things were. Thanks to the advice of my dad who warned us to always carry a large stick while walking in the woods- I gave the gator a solid whack across the nose and jabbed it in the eye. The gator rumbled and gaped his mouth but stopped chasing us. I had no idea how fast I could run until that day!

Nature is... nature. If something like that happened to me today-I'd be eaten.

OMG

Tiger sharks out here when I was 5. I love the ocean, but I learned early that they do come up to shore. I was 5 and only up to my knees.

Then my 5th child was about 8 months old we went to Stenson Beach out here for there day. I was exhausted and yelling at the adults to not let my kids go to far out because I had an aweful feeling. They all picked on me. Later that night the beach had been closed after a Great White came in. Didn't even know we got them here. But there it was right on the news.

Although this may not be the norm, it does happen. A lot of things can factor in.

This attack though I'm sure was because of all the thrashing and noise in the water. Like I said the two women had been flosting out in chairs and they had film of all the diving.

I grew up in Florida too. Just a fact of life there that you'll come into contact with alligators, snakes, and sharks. But in all the time my brothers and I played in the ocean and lakes, we never had a problem with the wildlife. We knew it was there and we respected it. I'd honestly worry more about getting in the water with a good sized gator than I would a shark.

The most danger I had ever been in was when walking to the Little General and some idiot tried to snatch my friend and I. One good whack with my stick and he took off. That day I learned the two-legged predators were just as dangerous as nature.
