Wounded cayuga duckling

They definitely go through a shock period. They don’t eat or drink and are wide eyed for a bit. Then if they get time to relax, they start eating and doing their normal habits. It’s a good sign it’s preening.

Did it use both legs while it swam? If it’s acting normal otherwise, I’d not be too worried. But @casportpony is the poop expert. Not me. I think you’ve been doing a great job so far. Just one side note, does the garlic come in the yeast? I was thinking garlic is on the toxic list for birds but can’t remember. You may want to research it to be on the safe side.

Anytime I have one who is injured, poultry vitamins go in their water. It just gives their body more nutrients to start the healing process. You can find it at any feed store. Keep up the good work. And I’m so sorry this happened. My dog got ahold of two of my cayuga ducklings and killed them last summer. :hugs

The garlic does come in the yeast and I was told that it was good for ducklings and chicks to have it to boost there immune systems.

It uses its hurt leg some while swimming, so I figured it would be good for it to workout that way it doesn't get to stiff! Thanks, sorry about your cayuga.

My dog has never bothered ANY of my ducks. If anything,it's the other way around! I only wanted to post this to give equal time to the good dogs, who do not attack ducks!

How's your lil one doing today @Fisherlmiranda
Still sitting and eating. After its swim before bed last night. I gave it a bowl of water and the vitamin supplement with spinach. It sat and gobbled it up. We ended up going to the feed store to get the duck a friend because it was peeping loudly when ever we would leave. And all night long. They had just 5 runner ducks that were on sale because they had been there for two weeks. So we picked one up, worked out because my cayuga is about 2 and a half weeks old. We tried the stuff animal and mirror trick but it still cried for attention. I've heard that cayuga are very affectionate and need lots of attention. Anyway after the swim, while it was eating its spinach. I really cleaned the wound good with saline and q-tips. Sprayed the wound spray on then applied the polysporin and it looks heaps better today.
