Writing goals

I don't wanna click a million buttons to find it every time. Word has it there all the time 😒
Word does not have it right there
I have to use the search mechanism to find it every time

If you’re on a computer on Google docs you can click the option to display word count while writing
And if you’re on a touch screen device it’s like two buttons

Yes it does 🤨 right in the bottom corner next to the page count.
Maybe that's only on computer :caf

I will stick to writing meeting minutes, and forum chats.
Leave the fancy stuff to others - my daughter told me 18yrs ago - that as a writer, anyone who says they know how long the book will be is a reporter not a writer - real writers just wake up - grab a book and a pen and say "now get out of my head before you drive me crazy" and write whatever comes. She was a pretty good writer back then - now she writes reports that mostly get listened to for Govt and business alike.

Yes I agree. I usually have a goal, and I i don't reach it fine, and if I go over it, good! I do know my big story does have 5k words left tho

Medieva fantasy, or just medieval it depends, I am writing a two fictional books set in medieval era,one in 55k words the other 4k so far, I am also writing one about two boys who start a car company 6k words, on with foxes preying in chickens, 14k words

Do expand on your medieval pieces.
What centuries? Or if you're specific, what years? :pop

I agree, but often it is helpful to have an idea of the book length so you can accommodate your plot.
Hard to know when you need to pack in important-thematic-middle-of-the-story material when you haven't a clue when the middle of the story actually happens.
But, on the other note, my initial starting "goal" (in loose terms) was 80k. Which expanded . . . and expanded . . . and now will probably end up at 100k because it's highly unlikely I manage to cram all of the final story happenings in a measly four chapters' worth of words.

And it all comes down to whether someone is a "plotter" or a "pantser", too!

I'm at about 7,000 on a novel that I'm working on! I'm curious as how you all beef up chapters. Mine are way to short and to the point lol. I like to do these excersises where you pick a random person in public and recreate a person in the image of them using ai. Then i assign them a personality, name etc. It was supposed to turn into short stories but one took off into my novel in progress lol😅.
Something I'm finding, and maybe it's due to the November writing challenge of 50k words written in the month of November (I'm not doing this, by the way), is you want to keep your first draft shorter so you can add scenes and work more on the words and sentences themselves which could take more words.
Have you tried doing this? If you want a "fresh" page every time, they'll still all be in the same document...

I keep relevant stuff there, handy where I can find it easy. My other random document is in Word.
I think I did that like…once
On a car ride
And this was how far I got

I think a completely fresh doc without tabs helps me to feel more comfortable with not doing a good job
Similar to not wanting to ruin nice quality sketchbooks…if that makes sense
Something that's being held from me? :drool
I have beef with Docs though. GIMME THE WORD COUNT.
You can click display word count while writing.
You know. I'm curious if anyone has a "unique" preference for how they write? I used to LOVE notebook and pen writing before I had a laptop, and my typewriter's good when I have a fairly clear scene in mind.
I prefer at the kitchen table with my big blanket that has my 2020 flock on it and the dryer going. The sound of the dryer actually helps me to focus better, and the blanket is just plain comfort, even if I'm putting it between me and the table because after awhile, the sharp edges start to hurt. I need a table where they're rounded or something, but this table fits the area I need it in.

Meanwhile, my doc is recording everything I do while I write and gives me a report if I want to see it.
