Wyandottes and a "tendencey toward dominance"

Speckled Sussex, or how about gold laced cochin?

My trio of speckled Sussex girls are a hoot. This morning they all crammed themselves into a bantam-sized cage I have in the chicken pen, through a bantam-sized cage door that was and still is closed. It was kinda interesting squeezing them OUT of that little door when I found them.

Aside from the fact that the door was closed, I thought the funniest part was that it wasn't just *one* of them. Ohhhhhhh nooooooooo, they ALL had to do it.

(I'm cheating a little bit on the door. That door has never had a latch on it, but it's on top of the cage and they would have had to lift it up by their beaks in order to get into the cage. And that door really is just bantam sized -- it's a cage I used to use for parakeets and finches....)

That does it! Now I REALLY want a video!

Wouldn't you just love to have seen them prying the door up with their beaks and cramming themselves in, like clowns in a phone booth?!

well, our wyandottes are the least sociable, and not mean at all, in fact they have been the nicest to the guinea keets we have.
our barred rocks and delawares are the aggressive ones and first in line to eat. every "family" is different.

My wyandotte's are not mean but if you want them to be real snuggly you need to start real early with them and they will be more friendly.Mine are not aggressive but the SLW is head hen in her pen.My BLRW and my white wyandotte's are the most friendly.

:thumbsupout of all my breeds- the sweetest 2 are the Partridge Cochins and Buff Brahmas--best birds in the world as far as nature! My Barred Rocks are very bossy and so are my Dominiques--they are sweet to me, but they are boss to other chickens!

My Speckled Sussex hen is a bit stand offish. However, she isn't mean or very high in the pecking order. My Barred Rock is top hen and she shows her dominance to keep everyone in line. Besides my silkies, the absolute sweetest we have is our Speckled Sussex Roo named Morning. He comes when he is called. And if I am not out long enough to feed him treats when they are let out to free range, he makes his way up to the house and around front to knock on my front door! He isn't sure of the kids, but will sit in my lap and eat bread from my hand. Have to admit that I also LOVE being able to give him a hug as he is the biggest thing we have. Ok, closely followed by and soon to be passed up by our young Black Orpington Roo.

I am hoping to get a good hatch on some SLW. I don't plan on keeping them in our mixed pen though. I will be sure to have the kids make them pets!

for what you want...the bantams would be the best I think....I have some and they are the sweetest brids ive ever met...all they want is to be in your lap....even the roo....i havent had them long so i havent yet been able to experience this part my self first hand, as they are cooped up for now, but supposedly they are amazing bug eaters! Everyone that I have talked to says theyre perfect for your garden. They apparently keep the garden clean and all of the bugs out, with out damaging your plants....let me know what you go with
