Wyoming Unite!!!!

It felt like fall this morning. It was 43°F. The Nanking Cherries are getting ripe and the robins are sitting on the power line above them ready to pounce on them.

Hope you manage to get a few Bob :D

I already had a couple, they were pretty good. They are so small and the seeds are so big compared to the size of the cherry that it is too much work to do anything with them.

The Serviceberries are getting ripe also. I have had a few of those also. They are very sweet this year but also small enough that it is too much work if you have to fight the birds for them.

The Evans Bali are a ways off but I do protect them from the birds because they are a normal sized pie cherry and I love homemade cherry pie.

Hey folks,
Are any of you Wyomingites interested in expanding your flocks? Here's the deal; A few days ago I decided that I had the room for 6 or 8 more chickens. One of several places that I looked was Meyer's hatchery -- they even will ship small batches. But as I looked a bit more, I see they are having a sale for a few weeks with free shipping, if you get 15. But it's $35 to ship a small batch, and $20 more for some heat deal they add. In short, 15 chickens were quite a bit cheaper than 8. I figured I'd just go straight run and fry all the roosters but one in 3 or 4 months, and that would about cover what I needed. I'd rather give birds I raised to good homes than eat my own though, and that seems like it could lead to lots of rooster drama in the meantime anyway.

This is what I'm proposing, I pick out 6 hens and one rooster a month or six weeks after I get them, and any of you who are willing to drive to between Lingle and Torrington can have what is left for free. Don't come for a couple, take them all.

My order ships July 22, so around mid September, they should all be obvious to breed and sex. Who knows, there may even be plenty of hens, more than the six I want, but there should be some nice roosters too.

This is what I ordered;
3 Buff Orpingtons
3 Speckled Sussex
3 Welsummers (I'll probably get my roo here unless they are all female)
3 Large Cochin, 2 are partridge one is blue (hopefully some future broodies)
1 Gold laced Wyandot
1 Partridge Rock
1 Rhode Island Red
(In past experiences with Meyer's, there are usually one or two extras in an order too)
Let me know if you want them, the sooner the better, so I quit trying to give them away.

When you are ready to let them go, put an ad on Wyoming craigslist and/or your local Facebook. It is often easier to sell than it is to give away. You might be surprised how far people in Wyoming will travel for the poultry they want. I am just outside of Casper and have had people show up from Buffalo, Riverton, Thermopolis, Midwest, Wheatland, Douglas, Glenrock, Cheyenne and Sheridan. This year I had people come from Lusk and Lander to get Sweetgrass turkeys.

I figured to do that if I don't have anyone speak up before then. I really don't need to make any money for them, I'm ahead already for ordering too many. I'd rather just bundle them all in one deal than mess with a bunch of calls and meetings, and internet diligence, but that is my plan B. I wouldn't even mind giving them to someone else who wanted to CL and FB store them.

You chose some nice breeds but I'm at capacity now. Thanks for offering though!

The robins are hard at the Nanking Cherries this morning. I doubt there will be any left by this evening.

It was 94°F here today. I did not notice because I spent the majority of the day in the goldfish pond pulling reeds. I had an audience. At one point there were at least 11 toads sitting on downed reeds, staring at me. From time to time some of them would move closer. I suspect they wanted to get a closer look at what was destroying their world.

A neighbor stopped by allowing me to take a break. When heading back to the pond, I had to go back and grab a camera because of this visitor who was more than happy to pose for photos.

Years ago I found some tiger salamanders in one of my window wells. I relocated them to the goldfish pond where they immediately began feasting on the tadpoles.

I had not seen any evidence of the salamanders in years. Yesterday when cleaning up all the cattails that I had pulled to clear out the center of the pond, I found a tiger salamander under the cattails. I returned it to the pond. Later while picking up a batch of cattails that were still dangling in the water, I found a salamander clinging to the reeds. It is possible it was the same salamander that I had returned to the pond but it is also possible that it was a second salamander.
