Year old drake not getting the job done...

I have a year old crested drake and a year old buff duck. They were raised together and are best friends. Whenever I change the pond water the drake tries to get busy, but... it doesn’t seem like he is completing the job. Sometimes she gets annoyed and just gets out of the pool. I’ve heard ducks can be brutal but she doesn’t take any of his crap. I always look at the eggs to see a bullseye and never do. I’ve tried to research this, but haven’t found anything relevant, everything just says year old ducks are fully able to breed.

Any insight would be helpfully, really. I would love to breed them.

Okay, just making sure, lol. Hmm, is this his first breeding season? He may just not have the hang of things yet.

I got them March 2017 as ducklings. I saw him try a bit at the end of last summer and it was the same thing. She just starting laying about a week and a half ago and I’ve changed the water every day since I know that triggers romance. She is at least two pounds smaller than him. It’s actually pretty hilarious to watch... he’s a mess. He’s such a good protector though, so, he’s going be the dude no matter what. Maybe I can show him some videos?

My drake is in the same situation! He tries all the time but I’m not sure he’s very effective, and sometimes he ends up falling off to the side with his orange feet waving lol.
He’s otherwise a great boyfriend, keeps watch, let’s her eat all the food, always near.
They are a year old this month and I hope he figures it out soon!

Get some pictures of the eggs and post here. I was positive my drake wasn’t getting the job done. He falls off them after 30 seconds tops. And he’s so uncoordinated. I have yet to see him park the car in the garage. However, I had WVduckchick look at the eggs and everyone of them were fertile. I was shocked. Now there is a chance he just needs more practice, but post some egg pics first. He might surprise you.
