So I just noticed that there's dry yellow scab on top beside the comb, it has a foul smell. Is it a dried puss?? And also, my rooster has huge floppy comb and the unexposed side part of comb has yellow pudding-like. I'm not sure if I can take that off. I'm planning to remove his comb, however, I live in a tropical country and I believe they need their comb. So i don't know what to do. My chicken's comb is healthy, they are plumpy and red but a little dry and hard. It has black spots due to dried blood (because my chicken and cat had a fight one time). I hope you can help me.

Here's the yellow scab

Thank you! I will do it tomorrow morning. I was scared to remove it when I first saw it. For your last question, I'm guilty about it! He doesn't dust bath :( I couldn't find any safe sand for my chicken. That might be the reason why there's build-up sebum on his comb. Will any sand do?

Dirt is the most important thing in dust baths, but sand can make it loose. Some optional other things would be wood ash, a small amount of sulfur for insect control, and some people use DE. It is overrated, expensive, and it can irritate eyes and breathing. But it is okay to add if you wish as long as there is plenty of dirt.
