YO GEORGIANS! :)

Post Office called at 6:45 this morning to say my chicks had arrived. I got them home asap and found all 13 looking great. They've spent the day in the home made brooder eating, sleeping, chirping, chirping some more. They're adorable! I'm almost afraid to go to bed tonight for fear of finding something sad in the morning. Is that odd?
That's so exciting. Mine will be here in two weeks. I'm sure I'll have the same fear of going to bed the first night they are here. I have a wifi camera setup so I can look at them when I want too. I'll probably wake up all night to look at my iPad! :jumpy

Woke up this morning and ran right out to check on the chicks. All 13 were running around and pecking at everything. So far I haven't seen anything that alarms me. I only hope I know what I'm looking for. This is like being a new mommie.

hmm. i am so confused now. i am suppose to meet this lady on saturday to return the two males for two females. maybe i should plan on only returning the one RIR. ???
I would, but that's just me

@LingaB take some liquid food coloring and paint their vents. Use a different color for each hen and within 2 days you'll know who it is.

I would do it just to see what food colored eggs look like. And I know who lays what.

Thanks! I thought it was the other way around. Stupid chicken newbie.

You learn new things everyday

Did it taste weird the next time you put in on?
Why would you even ask that, or think it for that matter?

Just make sure you clean the litter regularly and change the water often or better yet, use a nipple feeder. Use medicated chick starter. The thing you don't want your chicks to do is eat a lot of poo and drink from water with poo in it. And believe me, they will poo in the water! What you are looking for is chicks that will sit still with hunched backs and ruffled features. And watch for bloody poo. This could be the start of Cocciliois. (Darn, I can't remember how to spell it!). But anyway, that is probably the number one reason for chick death. Just enjoy your chicks. You will soon be 'like a waiting grandma' when those chicks are old enough to start laying and you are waiting for them to give you your first egg! It's like them giving you a grandchild! Lol! And then you become a chicken addict like me and want more!

What kind of chicks did you get?

I'm so excited for you. I lose sleep at night from the excitement. I know that's pitiful, but we have been preparing since April with building our coop and learning all that I can. My husband is going along with it. He has never had chicks. I grew up with them in my backyard and remember it well. Glad yours made it overnight.

@sanchabird it's because Robo is a dork

Yes, the nipple waterers! Start them when their babies because when they get older, it's harder to get them to use them.

I got 2 F Ameracauna (to go with my EE roo), 2 F Black Australorps, 8 F Buff Orps, and 1 Buff Orp Roo. At least in theory there are 12 females and 1 rooster. We have 2 Buff Orps and 2 Red Sex Links that should be laying within a couple of weeks. I'm already on the edge of my seat waiting for the first egg. We got those from TSC so they were a little older when we got them. I keep looking at the wee chicks and so far they look great. (And SO cute!)
