YO GEORGIANS! :)

My hatch is horrible. All signs point to low incubation temp. I'm considering tossing these out the window and just selling eggs until I get a real incubator. :barnie But my stubborn side won't let me!! :lau

I just don't understand how in winter I was having 100% hatches and all of a sudden the last few I'm running like 70% or less. Usually less. I haven't changed anything I'm doing BUT I could see where maybe my temp has been running lower overall. I became lax with it when things were going so well and didn't worry over the times it seemed to be lagging. Maybe those times have been more often than I realized. I'm usually more concerned with not frying them, being still air and all.

Hello Yo Georgians I have been reading this thread for weeks ,I feel like I know all of you. I have three girls I know you all are laughing so let me tell you why only three.I bought six chicks about three yrs ago three were killed by a coon , the other three were roos those boys were so mean I gave them to a friend that had hens and no roos it was a win win . So I then bought 12 chicks they were doing so good I had them for about four months when something dug into the coop killed them all . A friend took pitty on me and gave me three of his and yes the coop has been reinforced . Now the chicken math has hit fifteen chicks on the way (light Sussex) a new coop needs to be built BIGGER. I am glad to meet all of you and look forward to picking your brains to learn as much as I can .

Welcome!! And good luck with your babies. Hopefully you are predator-proofed now. It's funny how they find a loophole in almost any setup.

Ok, so it's looking like several people can do April 18th. So that's what we'll plan for. You can all work out with one another any swaps or purchases you want to make while you're here. And if y'all want to, we can do a cook out with hotdogs and hamburgers.
and for those of us not in the loop where is this going to be?

Friday evening, I had an unpleasant encounter with one of my neighbors. In the past, I've had issues with their dog coming onto my property. Twice, I've visited with them and they've assured me that they'd keep her on a leash. I was home Friday afternoon, all my windows open when I heard all the hens go crazy. I ran outside there were feathers everywhere. It looked like the molt happened in the yard. I grabbed a Zebra Super Shot that I use to keep squirrels off the Topsy Turvy tomato plants and bird feeders. I got a couple hits on him. It fires yellow pellet/balls, they bounce off, don't penetrate. The dog runs away home.

Gathered the flock and got them back into the coop and run, locked it up. No hens missing, but a ton of feathers ruffled. I was about to go back in the house when the county animal control officer pulls up in front of my house and two county sheriff's patrol officers park behind him.

Apparently, she's called Animal Control on me saying that my chickens are roaming unrestrained. They were, I free range them when I can but they don't ever leave the property. They get my statement, look at the toy gun, it's orange, clearly a toy. Now, the dog owner is there. She's talking to the one deputy while the other is talking to me. Then we all gather together where the one officer explains that my chickens are not violating any laws but her dog is. Apparently my county has a leash law for dogs but not chickens. The animal control officer said something that I think is worth repeating... He said, "In your yard that is a family pet, in his yard that is a predator."

This evening her husband came by, apologized and told me he is installing a chain link fence up close to the house.

That's a great ending. I hope they do get a fence. We had trouble with our neighbor's dog when she killed my small dog I had when we moved here. Neighbor apologized and said he would "keep her up".. Which he did.. Until she got out a year later and killed my dog that replaced the original one she killed. :(

Neighbor dogs are a real pain!!

The sad thing is it's not really the dogs fault but the inconsiderate neighbors. I hate having to pop a dog with a bb gun but I will if it comes near my chickens. I don't want my animals out of my yard so I can't understand why others don't care about their animals. I would worry my dog would get hit by a car.

Your close enough you could borrow my bator but my humidity has been all over, but then I put it to heating the house, temp stays at 100 so I don't mess with it, bator will be free on the 29th. oh and I forgot to say about the roos yes it has been crazy, I have not forgotten either.

I take my 17 rifle and shoot into the air when the neighbors dogs comes to visit to run him home, I keep my dogs in my yard and keep a close eye out so they don't go anywhere but the field behind my house that has nothing in it, but the neighbors dog is the one who killed my game hen, and it comes and chases the cows in the pasture on the other side of me, the neighbor has come down to apologize and to offer to pay for the hen but I wish he would just keep his dog home. I have been lucky with critters getting my birds, but in the last week I have killed 2 huge opossums my cats just look at them like ok welcome, actually one was early in the am still dark and I had to take DH to work and I have a shelf in the open garage and saw what looked like one of my white cats acting funny on the shelf glad I really looked because I was about to reach in and pet the cat, that would have been bad, the teeth were I'm not kidding 2 inches this animal was huge. I told my DH and he laughed because he thought of the commercial that the woman lets in a raccoon thinking it was her cat. it was an eye glass commercial.
