YO GEORGIANS! :)

Hi everyone! Been a while since I've posted, summer kept us busy. I hope everybody has had a nice one!
My little cockerel has grown into a handsome roo. He only tried to get me one time, and as he sidled on up to me, I poked him. He ran off so fast! Hasn't tried anything since then.

I also, finally, got my Swedish Flower pullet. The kids named her Daisy, and she is just as sweet as can be.

On a sad note, we had to put down one of our hens last night. My eldest daughter is pretty distraught, as it was her chicken. She had stopped laying, and last night I discovered her listless with a swollen vent (covered in maggots). I was pretty sure she was either egg bound, or had a broken egg inside, so I made the call to put her down. It wasn't the first time she had egg issues. She was a wonderful hen. I don't think my husband handled the, errrrr, euthanasia so hot. He was the one who had to swing the ax, and being a city boy, he had never seen a chicken butchered/put down. But, he did what needed to be done. We couldn't let her suffer another day.

Other then that, life is good!
Hey! good to see you back! nice looking rooster, over the last few pages we'd been discussing when they get to 'that time' they want to challenge us. A well placed boot does wonders as an attitude adjustment, that's for sure!

sorry about your hen, sometimes there's just no other way to handle things.

Nice to see you back!

yesterday, Jill and I were sitting on the porch outside, and a couple of times, all my hens would go crazy cackling and yelling. Even got the rooster stirred up. I'd get up and go down to see what the commotion was all about, did it a couple times. No additional eggs in the nests, none laid any where in the coop or run. Just about as soon as I'd get back to the porch, they'd start up again.

I came to the conclusion they must have a running bet going to see who can guess the correct amount of time for me to come down there once they do it. It's getting close to time to feed them their treats a few days out of a KFC bucket....

Beautiful rooster and pullet. So sorry about your daughter's loss.

OK, so I know I haven't been on in forever and I badly need to catch up but I HAD to share this. My poor SLW, Diamond laid this massive egg today.
400

Egg on the left is her average, the right was today's! (Bottle cap for reference.) No surprise that it was a double yolk, too!

Papa Chaz, I have one cockerel, approx. 4 mos. old. He is not showing any signs of being a rooster, yet. However, I am already practicing the technique of walking behind him and asking him to go where I want him to go, (away from me)! I hope I am getting a head start on who is the alpha of the flock.

So...still no eggs from my girls!!!!!! 22 weeks and nada. My poor roo grabs them and tries to mount them but they get mad and he let's go. Nothing for him or me!!!!! Ggggrrrr!!

Because of work, finishing the coop has been put on the back burner. However, weather permitting, I plan to finish tomorrow. When hanging my hardware cloth on the run...are 1/4 inch crown staples that are 2 inches long from an air gun secure enough?
