YO GEORGIANS! :)

I have one CCL cockerel-- he will be 3 weeks old on Wednesday. He is from Orchard Hill in Griffin and they claim their stock is from Greenfire. I hatched him, well, three weeks ago almost! I do have my son's "special bwack chicken" who is an Isbar, and a suspected pullet but I am not sure I'm interested in breeding. My main goal had been to get a nice group of hens for what I would call my "foundation layer" group. My idea was to have an Isbar, CCL & the Bielefelder hen. Well, I think I've achieved 2 out of 3, but the laws of the universe being what they are, I also have these 3 boys---the Biel, the CCL and the Isbar. I had really wanted the colorful eggs to supplement the ho-hum medium white eggs of the Polish. I'm really at a point where instead of trying to sell them, I'd just like them to go to a good home even if they become eventual dinner. I am having the unexpected maternal feelings toward them even though I know it makes no sense to have so many roos in such a small flock.
Orchard Hill is selling CCL and Isbar chicks cheap right now. Here's an add of theirs that I found on craigslist just a few minutes ago (Click on the image to make it larger.):

Anyway, unless you have something that someone really wants, it is VERY tough to sell cockerels or roosters this time of year, and most straight-run chicks go for a song right now. I hope you find homes for your CCL and Isbar boys.

Since I lost two of my new Buff Orpingtons pullets to snake bites, and only have one girl left, I may pick up some more BO chicks. I see that someone on craigslist has BO pullets for $3 each. It's hard to beat that price.

Kat, I'm bringing home-made smoked pulled pork. I just need a headcount, so that I know how many butts to pull. I'll also bring hamburger-style buns and home-made cole slaw, both for the pulled pork. In addition, I'll bring some home-made Cajun-style boudin (pronounced boo'-dan). It's a spicy pork-and-liver rice sausage that's very popular in the Acadiana region of Louisiana (where I'm from).

I hope Robo pulls some alligator out of the freezer camp.

The day should be fun!

Thanks for getting back to me. Seems like your quail operation is a well-oiled machine. How many quail do you raise at a time? I wouldn't mind helping you dress some of your quail the next time you do it just so that I can learn. When it comes to cleaning a turkey, a chicken, or about any kind of fish, I can hold my own, but I haven't worked with something as small as a quail.

Also, what are your thoughts about Georgia Bobwhites? People who raise quail seem to either love them or not at all. I've read that they can be tough to raise if you don't know what you're doing.
I'll be processing in about 8 weeks. When it gets closer, I'll let you know.
I've never had bobwhites. I've heard they are a little more difficult to raise than the coturnix. They are more aggressive and more flighty. You can keep them in a colony but there's got to be lots of room. Typically, they are a 1:1 or 1:2 mating ratio. They don't lay year round either. Lights may extend it some. They take longer to mature also.

I started keeping them mainly for meat. 8 week turn around. About 3 lbs of feed per bird for that 8 weeks if you can limit the waste.
The eggs are a bonus. I eat some, sell a few and feed a lot of them back to the chickens.

I think I hatched out over 300 last year. This year I kept 36 breeders going into the winter. I've lost a few, but there's plenty tokeep the eggs coming for hatching.

It looks like they're doing a lot better with hatching their eggs than I did...I had a terrible fertility rate. They were nice about offering to replace, but NATURALLY the only CCL that made it was a male. Maybe it's meant to be... I hope you find some nice Buff Orps. I'm putting my colored egg dreams to bed for a while I guess.

I'm in Macon...so probably a little longer than it will take me. PM Roboduck for directions!

Sounds great. I'd like to see your quail and eggs sometime. I'm about 20 mins from Draketown, so let me know when it's a good time for you. My wife is interested as well.

Lol. Same to you. I have 3 cream legbar males I need to sell or process eventually. Did you need a cream legbar female? My silkie hatched out 2 females for me and I could part with one. They are 2 weeks old. I was having a rough go of hatching the cream legbar eggs, but it looks like I've got things working now, so I just put a bunch more in my incubator.

Thank you for the offer, but I think I'm going hold off for now. I have 12 eggs that are on 12 today---6 golden laced polish and 6 white crested blues. I am about to be eat up with chicks. I may holler at you in the future about one. I am down to the fort with decent regularity as my husband works at bluebird, so we are bound to catch up at some point! Right now I'm just focused on thinning my rooster numbers and looking at potential breeding pairs in the others.

The crele polish are feathering out really nicely now, and I'm keeping an eye on the silver laced.
