Thanks, Liv. At least BSLs are have decent egg production, even if they won't breed true. The bird my daughter has become attached to looks like it may be an Easter egger, since it's developing "sideburns", unless there's another breed that sports that look? That little brown chick got mixed into the SS the seller was carrying (they had EEs with them, but I had really wanted to stay away from bantams).

If there is any sunny side up on this, you do know a lot of people here who will happily give or sell you some chickens. I believe there will be the announcement of a mid July swap meet in Macon. The organizers are trying to firm it up so that they can truly announce.

Chiming in as another grumpy chicken lady here. My Black Australorps are turning out to be BSLs.
Grrr. I was already upset the dang seller didn't bring 10 black chicks so, I got a couple other breeds I hadn't planned on foisted off on me because my 9-year-old was with "picking them out" at the meeting place. I checked their legs when we got home and they had seemed the right color black and not yellow. Now the pullets are definitely developing brown neck feathers though.

So, after none of our eggs hatched, my plan of buying the chicks to get the breeds I dreamed of has gone south. Thankfully, Miss Cynthia is practically a neighbor and she has the partridge pattern I fell in love with on her Brahmas.

I had a similar thing happen to me once. The breeder was offering BO hatching eggs along with some other hatching eggs we were getting, and he ended up comping us a dozen BO hatching eggs. When the chicks hatched, they turned out to be BO/Black Austraorp mixes. Cute chicks, but we would have passed had we known they were mixes. Since they were free, I just dropped the issue, but I haven't bought any hatching eggs from that breeder since.

In your situation, since your chicks were all BSLs, did you end up with all pullets since the cockerels have a white patch on their heads?

No, I didn't because I bought the chicks older and they all looked alike by then. That's why I checked their legs when I first got them a month ago to make sure they were gray (BA) and not yellow (BSL). Now it seems that I wasn't looking at the bottoms of their feet. I am going to let it be water under the bridge, because the seller probably had the wool pulled over his eyes too. I looked up the old FB message and sent a message about it to the kid. His mom was with him driving, seemed like a new family business.

So, I will have quite a few cockerels to dispense with. If they had been BAs it would have been easier to rehome them. My 9-year-old seems to understand the need for the freezer (since they are a cross, maybe this first culling will be easier.

I see. Sorry to hear that. If the breeders didn't know what they were doing and made an honest mistake, that's one thing, but if they just said whatever to pawn the chicks off on you, that's another. You're right though; some battles aren't worth fighting. From the photos, it seems that Cyn has some nice-quality birds. I just hope you end up with a flock that makes you and your son happy. That's what is most important.

I just want to thank @Flowerbh for empowering me to gaze upon the wonders of life. I have fought my desire to be patient until my enthusiastic candler won over. I am pleased to report 12/12 white polish eggs, 3/5 chocolate/cuckoo orps look good (2 shells too dark to see well), 3/3 Isbars good, and 3/4 CLs looking nice with one clear.

Look out 6/23, here we come!!!!
