You CAN keep live grass in the run!

I just let them thrive and beleive it or not but they eat the grass and they make a excellent fertilizer

wow... what a great idea, I have had a cat lurking around my chickens lately and have not let them out to free range in fear that they could be attacked, but I know they love to eat the grass, so this would be a great idea to do for something in their run they could eat on rainy days when I do not let them out or when animals are lurking
