If you want to go down this certain hill in our town, it has to be a very thin layer of snow that has thawed and refroze to make a smooth layer of ice on top, but not broken into shards so that it pops the tube or injures you while giving the minimum amount of friction, which gives the maximum amount of gravitational potential energy, which gives you..... the most speed and distance anyhow, you know your a Northerner if you used an inflatable mattress as a sled.
