You might be a “Southie” if...

My mom was born there (Lead/Deadwood) and lived in Central City as a child. Grandpa worked in the mine until they went off to Coeur d'Alene to work in the ship yards during the War. The casinos are boring and gauche, imo, but Deadwood would be dead without them--so I'm told. Not sure it was worth it.
It wasn't worth losing all that history, by building casinos!:(

Small world....I Lived in Coeur d’Alene, ID for about 10 years when I was little. There was not much there besides the lake back then so can’t imagine what it would have been like when your grandpa was there! It is crazy to see how much that town has grown and become such a tourist destination.

To be fair, the place was falling apart. Now the opera house has been restored, museums, etc. Historic hotels restored. So I guess it was kind of a win for historical architecture though most of it's been filled with slot machines and bars, restaurants, gift shops. Deadwood was a gambling town, so...

It's not much of a place to live though, let alone raise a family. 'Course it wasn't before, either. Mom told me it wasn't a good place to grow up. dangerous, lots of drunks. Dirty and in disrepair. And they weren't even in Deadwood technically, though that's where she went to most of HS. Things were tough all over back then. It was the depression.

I don't know. It's sad to see these little towns go by the wayside or become bedroom communities to the big cities, but the world changes. 🤷‍♀️

It's a beautiful place. I've always been in love with mountains and water. ❤️ Cities, not so much! 🤨
