You might be a “Southie” if...

Sorry but naked sunbathing is completely off my list ever since I turned 50. I don't even look in mirrors nekkid.

Below zero is kind of a rough guideline here for stay inside weather, unless you have snowmobile gear on. Or a heated fishing shanty.
You younguns! Such wimps. It’s about endurance not looking good.

My boyfriend, who grew up here in God's country and knows a cold winter when he sees one, has taken to spending most of the winter in Florida, the wimp. He's getting ready to head up here for the summer. He hasn't even hit the Florida state line yet and is already whining like a 5 year old that it is COLD here - bless his heart.

You might be a Southie if you don’t eat smelt.

I was talking to some southies and they were going berserk over my fixing myself some smelt.

Here they are raw.

Below I have sprinkled a little corn meal on them so they don’t stick to the bottom of the deep fryer

I only fry them until they are light brown the. Move them to an air fryer.

And the finished food

Dunk or pour a little apple cider vinegar over them and they are yummy.

Mm ight as well fry up some earth worms while your at it .

They are the most delicious fresh water fish - delicate light white flesh, sweet, not fishy tasting at all. Since they are about the size of a finger or a little larger, it takes a long time to clean enough for a good meal, but they are so worth it. And available only for a short time in early spring. I do prefer lemon juice on mine.

When I was young we went smelt dipping in the UP. Folks sat alongside rivers and creeks near the Great Lakes, waiting for the fish to run upstream to spawn. Catching them using hand nets to scoop them up. Now the smelt hardly run at all - they are much more rare in Lakes Michigan and Huron. The fisheries here bring them in from Lake Superior.
