Back in times of old, due to poor mapping Maryland and Pennsylvania had a territory dispute, and Mason and Dixon were the surveyors that established the state boundaries (along with northern Virginia). That line is the Mason-Dixon line. It was later used unofficially to indicate the line between slave and non-slave states, and extended along the Ohio river (and north/west along the Mississippi/Missouri rivers).
