Your 2024 Garden

I planted a couple cayenne plants in the small garden next to my greenhouse. Over night something ate all the leaves and nibbled back the stems.
I never had anything eat cayenne. Must be some hungry critters around here.
Sorry to read this!

The critter damage to my gardens is BAD this year! I have to replant my collards.😞

I have some bunny damage along the bottom of my pole green beans in the big garden that's fenced. I've been trying to catch them in the garden so I can watch where he runs to get out.
Thinking about building a box trap and set it along side the beans. Hope I don't have to.
LOTS of bunnies this year. 😩

I tried to run down a bunny while I was out mowing. I think he got the idea he was not a welcome visitor in my gardens. My biggest fear is a herd of deer will come in the dark of night and graze my sweet potatoes down to their roots. That's what they did in TN where they were protected by the city. We lived almost in the middle of town and they came through town eating flowers and gardens along the way. Here they are not protected when they are eating crops.

This morning I picked my first zucchini!

But I noticed some damage, and frass...

There were two tiny borers inside, they are no more. And most of the fruit is edible.

We always have a lot of bunnies in the yard. The raised beds are tall enough that they don't get in so at least that's not an issue. My dogs get a couple here and there, and the local predators also help to keep the number under control. But they're pretty darn cheeky and will just stand there in the middle of the driveway, waiting to get run over!

I need to set some rat traps outside of some coops before they start finding things to eat in the gardens. I suspect rats have taken some eggs already. No real squirrel problems yet. I've got plenty of acorns so far. It's the ants that got into my Irish potatoes and will farm aphids in the okra if I don't keep Sevin ganules around the base of the okra plants. We got a lovely thunder shower this afternoon and radar shows rain again from 9 to 11pm tonight. I think our black berries are done for the year. I need to dig some of the new plants and plant them in a row where the variety planted died. I'm replacing them with the hardy ones that took the deep cold and high temps with the new plants I have here.
