Your 2024 Garden

I put up several more quarts of green beans this week. Probably have enough.

My kitchen table is covered in Black Krim and Big Beef tomatoes. I need to start processing those.

Butterbean vines hanging full. Will soon be picking those. I will turn on the soaker hose this morning to wet them down good.

Heat and humidity lately has been rough especially since we are not getting regular rain. Today's heat index will be 110.

I went to the garden at 7 am. Didn't feel to bad yet and there was a breeze. I picked a few more tomatoes and a big handful of greenbeans, some cucumbers and zucchini. Ha! zucchini, there is always zucchini.

Let the soaker hose run several hours on the butterbeans. Looked them over and they need picking soon.

The sun was getting really hot so headed to the house.

Checked on the chickens 3 times today. Changed their water 2 times so they'd have cool water. Also gave them some chilled cucumbers and zucchini this afternoon.

Showers in the area. Hoping one passes over my garden this evening. :fl

We got the peas and Roma II beans picked. I see some Ford Hook Lima beans putting on pods finally. We are about done shelling today's picking of peas. I need a few things from town in the morning and one of them is a couple of smoked ham hocks for a pot of peas. It's been a couple of bad days here. I've been out of peanut butter. I got stocked on jams but forgot peanut butter. I need to plant garden peanuts. Here in the heart of peanut country I should be able to find seed peanuts. We have a grinder to make our own peanut butter.

I accidently grew peanuts in my garden one year. My neighbor feeds the squirrels and I was bad about weeding. Come autumn, when I was digging the sweet potatoes up, I came across a peanut plant!

The pea shelling is done for the day. More will get picked Sunday afternoon is it is not raining. It feels good to know that we have a $100 worth of tasty good zipper cream peas ready for the freezer. Two or Three more pickings and we will have a years supply. I can still plant a few more now for a fall crop of peas to eat fresh and freeze a few more of. Arthur is fussing about all the shelling in my thumbs but he might as well chill because it is just one of those jobs that must get done.

I don't know how many pints of tomatoes my wife has canned but several along with several pints of Roma II green beans. The tomato plants for the canning garden are about ready to set out. A week later the mixed colors of bell peppers will be ready to plant. For the bad news. I'm about as a hen turned out into a hail storm. Coons have gotten into our processing corn patch that is no where near ready. By Monday they will be greeted with 20,000 volts of a special greeting.
