Your 2024 Garden

Pics
The temperature was in the 50s and 60s today, so I decided to do some site work for where I am placing two more raised beds.

Years ago we had a vegetable garden with raised beds. I let it go to weeds, then trees. I had all the trees cut down 18 months ago, then we covered the stumps with carpet to smother new growth. I decided to place the new raised beds partly on the carpeted area.

When I pulled back the carpet I found a lot of stumps. Some were fairly small, and most of them were dead, rotting.

Site of first raised bed. You can see where the old beds and paths were.

If the stumps were obviously dead I just cut them as close to the ground as possible.

I used my reciprocating saw to cut the stumps.

I'll add the rest of the boards to the sides tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

I think I will plant more on raised ridges this coming season. Even an 8-10" gain is easier on the back that planting on flat ground. While living in MO I planted everything on a ridge just like it was sweet potatoes. I had heavy black clay type soil and it was much better to drain and irrigate than just plant flat and mulch. I did use about 150 heavy bales of wheat straw every season for mulch that became organic matter every time it was plowed under.

Well thanks to this thread (and Baker Creek's mailed catalogue) I've placed my seed orders for next year. 👍 Might wing it on tomatoes and see what starts are available locally.
Is it the 2024 catalog? I requested one a bit ago but haven’t received it yet!

Yup - mine arrived yesterday. Didn't get one last year though. It's fun to flip through, puts ideas in my head sometimes, though I do most my actual browsing online.

I just got my Baker Creek catalog today... actually I got two catalogs!

What should I do with the second one? No one around here is serious about gardening.
