I know there was a lot of people losing chicks after getting that special coffee grounds bedding. That's all I know though. Our birds don't have access to caffeine at all so I've never looked into it

Ah! Ok, I hadn't heard that. Yeah, I wouldn't put ANY coffee grounds where chicks could get them. I'd heard that people who used to coffee grounds bedding with adult chickens really liked it.

bitter melons

Those need a loooong season. Do you have plans to start them inside? @gtaus grew them in his zone 3 (!!) garden last year and had good success by starting them indoors. He grew them in one of his raised beds, letting them grow and vine up a trellis. I was impressed!

I start almost everything inside because of how unpredictable our last frost is. It was late April last year when it hit

Late April is good. We had a frost in May. And it has snowed on Mother's Day in 2020 and 2021. I don't remember if it snowed on Mother's Day in 2022 but it didn't this year

We had a hard frost on May 26th last spring. Usually, the last frost is the 15th-ish of May. I lost 3 of 4 luffas, some tomatoes, a basil plant. Lots of stunted stuff that came back, thank goodness.

I started stuff in the green house around the first of April. I might start stuff a week or two earlier this time.

Well, we had good luck growing bitter melons in our Zone 3b using starts. Our last frost date is late May here in northern Minesota. We usually don't plant anything until late May, Memorial Day weekend, or mid-June for hot weather plants like peppers. So, getting an early start indoors is a must for us.

We saved a lot of seeds from the bitter melons we grew this year. I am planning on starting them indoors maybe even a few weeks or a month earlier this year.

I've grew these a couple times. They were tasty. They got mildew easily in my garden so I didn't continue to grow them. Probably because our summers are so humid. They may do better for you.
