Does anyone start onions from seed? Wondering if it’s too late. I usually buy sets in March…
Hopefully, someone who has done it more often will answer.

I tried it last year. I started the long-day onion seeds when I started the peppers seeds. It was about the second week of March. I transplanted the onions about the end of April or the first part of May if I remember right.

I got onions big enough to eat. I don't know how big that variety is expected to get.

I doubt that is the ideal time for either starting the seeds or transplanting. I did both when I could given other things I was doing.

I tried onions from seed last year. I planted the seed in a large flat Tupperware-like thing. I planted a LOT of seed, as I'd heard that germination could be iffy.

A lot of seedlings came up. They grew very slowly. It was in the green house, and I think I started them late March... early April. At about the 1 month age, they were spindly little things, and a lot of them just died, for whatever reason. Self thinning.

I moved the planter outside when I hardened off the other plants... and totally forgot about it. It got water when it rained, sunshine, and a few of the onions survived until July. By then, I though it would be too late to try to transplant them, so I left them. I pulled the ones that made it through to harvest, and got a dozen(?) small-ish onions.

I might try again this year, and be a little (lot) more methodical about it. If I do, I'll plant them in my sandy soil garden, as I don't know if transplanting them into my heavy soil garden will work.

I'll plant them in a large flat container again, but in rows so that I can get them out when the time comes.

I edited my post to include the picture. You're fast!
I got the peppers too. Ended up with 2 Koral Carrot packs, so I'll probably take one of those those to school and put them in the break room for someone to snag since I've got plenty of carrots already. also got a tomato I think and mini bok choy
