Your 2024 Garden

I think we have picked the last of the first planting of Zipper Cream peas. There will be about a 1/3 that many more to start picking on in 4-5 days. If and it is a big if I can get a spot tilled I'm planting some Black Eyed peas, Pink Eye Purple Hulls, and some Rattlesnake peas side by side for a comparison. Some locals here swear by their Rattlesnake peas but I've never had them and need to investigate.

And report back, of course. :)
We will. I got a glimpse of the okra last night just as it was getting dark as I was mowing near by. It's knee high and that is normally when I start picking that. Going out now for a look in good light and am hoping for enough to pick for some fresh okra, tomatoes, onion, and corn gumbo for supper tonight that is all from this years gardens. We would have it made if I could just plant and grow bacon.

2 more gallons of zipper cream peas shelled to go with the the 4 gallons already in the freezer. Now to plant some black eyes and pink eye purple hulls by next Week. There is a pod with half the shell removed in the middle of the photo. Those peas were packed in tight.

The peas I'm looking for are not Rattlesnakes. Those are beans. The peas are Whippersnappers. Can't get seed. They are sold out for the season.

We have been picking butterbeans this week. Have almost 2 gallons shelled in the fridge and more that need shelling and picking. So far harvest is looking good.

We are getting rain. Need to go pick the garden but got to go to town.

The table is covered with tomatoes again so need to can another batch.

Busy, busy time of year.
Thankful to have it!

Looks like vine borers are going to get all of my zucchini plants. I'm going to plant some more seeds, see if it's the sweet spot of "late enough that they won't get them, but early enough for the plants to bear."
I know of a couple who tried to hold off like this and the borers still got theirs. I do hope you have success. Please let us know how it worked out for you. I need to plant my zucchini now for a fall crop and am hoping like you I will get at least a few meals from them.

Butter beans are that green gold for us. We have tons of bloom but no beans. They are growing right beside the peas that have done so well so I know it is not the soil or pollinators. I have some pole butter beans (King of the Garden) I'm going to plant now and hope as a fall crop they produce.
