Your 2024 Garden

Yesterday I blanched and froze 14 quarts of butterbeans.

I have lots of tomatoes about ready to can. Probably enough for 2 canner loads. Will work on those tomorrow.

The heat and muggy air has been relentless. Highs near 100 with heat indexes up to 110. Nights still muggy and near 80. They are saying it will finally get better Thurs. :fl

I've got tomato plants ready to go in the ground. Really need to start tilling as soon as we get home from a necessary trip to the doc and picking up a few supplies from wally world and the lumberyard. The peas, okra, or tomatoes will not put themselves in the ground. Self planting seed have not been invented yet. Ma made me a jar of nacho chili peppers that are kept in the fridge. Can't wait now for that grilled ham and cheese with some on it. We may get some rain by 3pm. Hope it will hold off till 5pm and then rain a half of an inch.

We got a scant 1/4" of rain last night, and 1/2" the night before. A nice drink for everything. Supposed to cool off starting tomorrow, too.

There's a nice breeze out there, and I might go weed in the garden, but it's still HUMID, so I might let it slide until tomorrow. I've been very productive inside today, and I plan to clean the rest of the garlic out on the porch.

That could be my reason to not go weed. The garlic really does need attention. I found two bulbs yesterday that had what I think are bulb mites. :(

I'll be planting garlic in different beds next year. That seems to be the best bet for staying ahead of this pest.

How are you drying your garlic? I only got ten bulbs so I just put mine in my basement, in front of a slow fan. And I'm saving the two biggest to replant in the fall

Looks like I'll be tilling the 2 hours before dark and planting in the morning while DD#2 brings 2 of her granddaughters over for a visit. The rains are bypassing us again and it looks like starting Thursday most everyday for the rest of the month the Guessers are calling for a better than 50% chance of rain. So far no drought this summer. Need to till more tomorrow to get the spot ready for the King of the Garden pole beans and that means driving some 8' T-Posts in the ground to support the netting for their trellis. I hope these will make. We did find more than expected pods forming late yesterday evening just not enough to freeze any.

This is from last year, and it has always worked well for me. I had the plants spread out more than the picture above.

This year, I think part of the reason they didn't dry as well is because the stems were thicker and therefore had more moisture to begin with. Once the outer couple of leaves dried, it might have sealed in the remaining moisture. I don't think it's been any more humid than usual, really.

The area for the new planting of okra and purple hull peas has been finally tilled. Now if we can just get a rain that is supposed to hit us in about 2 hours I can till again tomorrow and plant. There is an odd corner behind a young cherry tree where I will plant 3 hills of pumpkins.

It's about time for us to plant the fall crop of summer squash, the main crop of broccoli, cabbage, & cauliflower. I'm going to try a new to me sprouting type of broccoli. I hope that will make it easier to keep worms out of it. I will keep these coated with those germs that give the worms appendicitis and make them swell up and bust. I do not like wormy broccoli. Or anything else for that matter. :he :he :barnie:barnie:th

Wormy veggies :sick

We had a little shower this evening. I'll take it!

I've been cleaning up an area in the garden for late summer/fall planting. I usually plant some collards, broccoli and cabbage. I need to get those started soon. Indoors, underlights because of the heat and bugs.

Today I canned 7 quarts of tomatoes. I also did some house chores. I was glad to sit down.

Hopefully go to the garden in the morning. It's suppose to be just "regular" hot tomorrow. None of those crazy temps for a while! :yesss:
