Your Plans For 2020! (Chat/Discussion)

I need to downsize ... 'cuz I wanna upsize! I currently have three decently sized coops/runs. The largest is shed-sized and houses my breeding Nankins and the two "Kindergarten Dropouts" - A NH red and a VERY large Jersey Giant. The two smaller runs (6X7 and 5X6, not including ) are currently full of bantam roosters - Nankins and a Silkie. We also have a large rabbit hutch with two strays in it - a solo hatch Nankin roo that I don't want to integrate yet, because the others will tear up his comb - and we want to show him this summer (It WILL be summer again, right? ... sigh ...) He has a friend at the moment, a Cochin hen that was rescued from a bullying situation ... but SHE was the bully!

We also have two babies from the Halloween Hatch-a-long - a very pretty pair of JG/Silkie crosses. The male will go to a friend who needs a larger rooster (Spooky's a moose, already!) while the pullet, Boo, will stay with the KDO's and Herman. That fills smaller run #1, but not until Spring, when the weather will break enough to put the babies out in the exposed run.

Spring works, though, because the current plan is to pass the extra (very tame!) Nankin roosters along to a local petting zoo. Since they're a critically endangered breed, the zoo is happy to have them as part of their education program, but since they weren't part of the seasonal plan, there isn't winter housing for them at the moment. So, Spring it is.

With the KDO's out of the larger set-up, we have room for the extra roo and the Cochin hen in there (she lays darker eggs, so there won't be any breed mix-ups.) Luckily, there's enough space in the bigger run for their hutch, so the see-no-touch system should be easy ... famous last words, I know!

That leaves a whole coop and run free as a brooder and grow-out pen! So once we start shifting birds around, we'll be chick-proofing one or the other of the lower pens and adding a brooder and creep. I am SO excited! We're starting to figure out some ways around the low fertility/high mortality hatching problems typical of rose comb Nankins, so we should start to get better survival rates ... fingers crossed! We were able to place three breeding pairs, last year - and all have been successful, so far. We have two more 4H families waiting for chicks, so we're hoping to add a few more breeders to the program.

So, it's a little early to say that we're on a roll, yet ... but we're off to a hopeful start .. and that's good enough for me, at least for now!

I'm going to continue working with my LF Naked Neck's, but trying to get more colors of them along with smaller neck bowties or even clean neck's with no feather's on those at all. I am also planning on looking into a new incubator to hatch the chick's in.

What a fun thread! I hope we can keep it going with our progress! I can't decide everything I want to do next year because I'm still dealing with this one. We are building another coop in the spring, but to get by we built our 4th small coop to accommodate some growing chick and to convert to a bachelor pad later if needed. I'm trying to integrate said chicks with little success so far. Will try again on Monday when it is supposed to stop raining for a day.

So cool to hear everyone's plans, what a great thread! We are going to order 6 Australorp pullet chicks, 6 Australorp cockerel pullets and one BJG cockerel. With BYC's help I have finally determined that Elvis, our first rooster 10 years ago, was probably a BJG and I'd like to try another one. We don't want to do straight runs because we really want to try to end up with 6 cockerels for the freezer and six brown egg-laying pullets. Will be ordering for mid-March delivery.

I'm getting my BJG! I didn't think I was going to, but ... well, let me start at the beginning.

At Cackle Hatchery you have to order a minimum of 3 of any breed. But I only want one BJG. I ordered 7 female and 8 male Black Australorps because there's a 15-bird minimum and was just sad because I wouldn't get my BJG rooster out of the deal. Being the Queen of the Second Thought, I then wrote them an email asking if I could change my order to 5 male BA and 3 BJG, thinking I could put the extra two BJG in the freezer.

Too late, she said, this year they are not doing adjustments on orders; I would have to cancel my order and start over. Except .... they always send an extra chick or two. Would I like to request a male BJG as an "extra"?

Oh boy, would I! Yes, please! So it looks like I'm going to "luck out" as we say here, and get what I wanted after all. :woot

I'm glad that you will be able to get what you wanted! Good luck with them when you get them!

Thanks! They are coming early - mid February. Oh, question: will one brooder heater be enough for 16 babies?

I'm not sure, as they do grow so fast. I use a brooder light for mine, and place a box under the light in the brooder. The box is big enough so that they can move a little bit away from the warmest part of the light if they want to. I cut a spot out of the box so it's like a door that they can go in and out of for food and water.

I have old run down shed that I'm wanting to convert into a chicken house and attach a outdoor run. My intentions are making it a "Glam" hen house, ya know Pinterest worthy, but Lord only know what my DIY skill level will produce and who I can get on board around here to help me. probably not until spring time though. If I get it done I'd like to add some Black Jersey Giants since I'll have extra coop space.

I'm defiantly adding a few layers either way, thinking a few light brown leg horns and Maybe I'll get a few random Polish, just to make it legit to my family that I am the still going to be the crazy chicken lady in 2020!

Hello Everyone!
:frow

I don't know if this has been done already but I thought it was a good thread idea!

With 2020 fast approaching, what are your plans with your poultry for next year?

New birds, new coops/runs, hatching or breeding, showing, trying something new? Whatever it is you have planned, share and chat about it here.

Feel free to ask questions or give out helpful tips and pointers!

Next year I've got plans to get my breeding shed fully set up and in working order and also to improve my breeding flock/line of Silkies.

I've got new breeding birds on their way and an extra incubator ready for use. I'm hoping for many healthy hatches in 2020!

Good luck in the new year to everyone!

:wee
That's some good questions! Tomorrow I'll go ask the birds what their plans are. :gig
They may not answer me since they don't trust people much!
