Your Plans For 2020! (Chat/Discussion)

So, I'm planning on some hatches... we have three Pekin hens, 2 of which are reliable broodies and the other is from a strain of reliable broodies, we also have a Pekin cock... so I'm hoping for more. We also have a Copper Black who is NOT meant to go broody, but consistently does and stays that way for AGES. So yes, we're hoping to hatch our very own eggs this year! Not buying fertile eggs, not buying day olds... can't wait!!

That sounds like huge fun!!!

Yes, I'm hoping it will be! Do you have any plans?
Not necessarily in the area of hatching, but we do have a couple cockerels, so if the pullets or hens decide to sit on some eggs in a couple months, I wont stop them. Our big chicken plans this year are to build a new walk in coop. We started out with 6 chickens and a 4x8 coop. Then added 3 chicks the next year and added another 4x4 coop. The year after that we decided 12 chickens was the right number for us and added another small prefab, which is falling apart of course. So a month ago we built a coop to replace that one, and to be the bachelor pad if I end up needing one. Now in March we are going to build one big coop, 8x10, with a divider, so I can keep everyone together. Convincing them to move into it may be a problem, but we will have a predator proof run attached to it, so I'll just need to entice them into the run.

Sorry I feel like I’ve neglected this thread!

How is everyone’s plans going so far?

Any of you achieved any of your goals yet?

:wee

So far so good. 40 chicks hatched almost 3 weeks ago. 30 of them moved to a different breeder. I ended up with 3 Bielefelder hens and one rooster, and 3 Sulmtaler hens and 3 roosters. I have 42 eggs in lockdown at the moment and 12 out of 12 fertilized eggs hatching in 2 weeks. The hatching is going great! Already collecting more eggs to put in in 2 weeks.

My second rooster is not working out very well. He is totally crazy. So scared of me! Acting like I am chasing him with a hatchet... I swear!! All I'm doing is standing there. I even quit talking to him to calm him down. I could deal with that... but he is driving the hens nutty as well. They are so scared of me when he is around. I have him separated from them and they are happy. I 'm a little worried that he will pass this behavior to the chicks... I've tried feeding goodies... meal worms etc... does not make a difference. I think I might invite him for supper... but I did pay 80Euros for him...expensive supper!

:eek:Wait a minute!
Y'mean we're going to held accountable for all of our great ideas? That means I have to start actually planning them, now, instead of simply envisioning. Winter Break only just started ... and now I have HOMEWORK! ZHEESH!
Spring is starting to peek around corners, now, so it's time to get started. Winter still rears its' ugly head pretty regularly. It's as if it starts to leave, then storms back, shaking its' finger at us and ranting "And ANOTHER thing! ..." I am SO ready for it to finally leave and slam the door shut behind it!
Anyway, there are enough crocus blooming to let me think, guardedly, about warmer weather, so we've begun the slow process of shifting birds and coops. We're currently down two roosters ... hooray! One is the Silkie cross cockerel from the Kindergarten Dropouts. He's moved to is new digs, but hasn't figured out he's a chicken, yet. He follows the resident MIL around the yard all day and sits on her porch at night ... far away from "his" hens. His new owners aren't too terribly happy, but MIL is thrilled!
If this weekend's weather holds out, we're going to strip the two lower runs and rebed them with pine bark and fresh needles. We'll see if my teenage "assistants" can stick with it that long. I need to be ready to order a good pizza bribe!

Fivewire Farm is focusing on Iowa Blue, White Chantecler, Mottled Houdans, Easter Eggers, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, and Silveruud Isbar breeding. We have a nice egg business and participate in the local farmer's market.
I hope to acquire some Crevecoeurs to breed as well since they are on the Conservancy "critical" list.
