Your preference: Laying crumble or Laying pellets?

x2 we started with crumbles but the waste was so bad we were losing like a third of the bag to the ground but now we feed pellets and there is no waste at all cause they can see the pellets on the coop floor and eat them.

i have bantams and orpingtons so i mix the layer feed so i have 50 - 50 mix works well for me, but if i dident have my bantams i would for sure go with pellets

Before I switched to a flockraiser type feed my two bantams (silkies) ate the layer pellets just fine.

I had the same experience with the waste and moved my hens, at 30 weeks young, to non-soy based layer pellets.

We just switched to pellets, they like them better. I sprinkled some in the run to see if they liked it, everyone came to eat it.
We were feeding layer crumbles. They ate the crumbles because they were eating the starter crumbles when we got them. We have a hanging feeder and when I cleaned the coop, there is usually a large shovelful of feed underneath it!
Is there more feed/# with the pellets vs. crumbles? Or is it the same?

I think it comes down personal preference really. I start my chicks on chick crumbs, then onto growers and my laying hens eat layers pellets. I think the meal is all the same at the start and only grounded up into crumble and pellets for different sizes to suit small to larger poultry. But i think regardless or crumble or pellets its all the same basic food only in different shapes and sizes. To help reduce waste/spilalge maybe try and put a tray or plate under the feeder to catch the spillage.

hope this helps!

My hens, and I, prefer crumbles. I have less waste with the crumbles (contrary to everyone else who feeds pellets!) and they eat it better.

However, I soak mine in goat milk before they get it, so the crumbles are damp and they scarf them right down.

They don't eat a lot of pellets, even when those are the only feed they get. They seem to waste more. I fed pellets for years until i changed to the crumbles by accident when the feed store was out of the pellets.

I was looking forward to changing from grower crumbles to layer pellets, having read about less waste.

But, I never saw any crumbles getting billed out of my hanging feeder - yet, since changing to pellets, I watch the hens billing out the pellets to get to the "pellet crumbles/mash" at the bottom of the feeder. I had a small amount of leftover grower I'd forgotten about - they certainly ate that with a lot more enthusiasm than the pellets. Maybe I'll try and find a local organciic layer crumble before this bag of pellets runs out
