aaaawwwwww Shadow and her Daddy .... how sweet. She is such a love.

We have never had one poo in the house except for the little chicks...the big girls and boys never have and they will come in for a couple of hours with Cheyenne, sit on a towel in her lap and just hang out.

Cynj, she is beautiful! Well, I goofed big time last night!!!!!!! It was seven below and when I went out to turn them loose this morning...THERE WAS A HEN WHO I MISSED COUNTING IN THE GARAGE! I was completely shocked. This little hen is a chook and not very big but she managed to stay alive and did well during the night! Our garage is a three sided building with a south facing opening..the entire south side is open

She looks none the worse for wear. I would have thought a predator would have snatched her up so I am very pleased with results.

It was totally my fault, I was tossing some corn to them as I usually do when I put them up at night inside the coop. So it was hard to count them as they all kept moving around. I will wait awhile after their treat tonight to go back in and count!

Thank goodness she made it. They are pretty tough. I did the same thing not long ago and she bedded down under the coop...but she was in a bad molt and so cold the following morning that she spent the day in the house and then I lost her the next day. I was so up upset with myself. The one time I do not do a double head count and someone was left outside....and a near bald one at that.

I simply love those three pictures Cyn! Shadow and Dad, enjoying a fireside chat and a cup of coffee!

I know what you mean about protective gear Cetawin!

I gave them their second session with warmed up oatmeal and whole kernel corn this morning! Of course they went for the corn first thing...and subsequently, oatmeal went flying every which direction in the process of getting at the corn!

I decided to just step back a few paces and let them have at it! Crazy chickens! You'd think I just handed them the greatest prize in the world they way they were carrying on!

Ladies? What other good warm treats can I give them during this cold weather? I love the idea of warming up their little bellies during cold spells like this, but I don't want to give them anything that might turn out to do more harm than good....like Cyn said about oatmeal and roo's not mixing in cold weather...but since I have no roos, that's not an issue.

So, any ideas? They get things like fresh lettuce, spinach and such just about every day, in addition to their usual scratch and layer formula. But, any other ideas? You know me...always looking for ways to spoil them rotten even more than they are now! If that's possible.

Hmmm...I wonder how mixing some of their layer stuff in with the warm oatmeal would do? Might that not be a good treat too?

*wanders off in search of more goodies to add to the warm mixes* Bundle up y'all and try to stay warm! Do like Ozark Hen says, and take it one day at a time.

Serrin, they are hoot over a treat aren't they? Love it!

I have made my crew baked squash (Butternut is their favorite), whole wheat pasta, steamed veggies, scrambled eggs, leftover fish (boned of course), leftover beef and they will knock you down for steamed brown rice. Pretty much anything I eat except white potatoes, they get a little of provided it is not too spicey. When I cook for them it is bland bland bland. Bake them a seed block. Mix scratch, whole wheat flour, eggs, water, sunflower seeds (unsalted roasted), flax seeds, cornmeal, oatmeal, oat bran etc etc that you have around at the time and bake it in a cake pan at 350 degrees until it is browned on the top. Let it cool a bit and they will annihilate it.

Here is one of mine

Talk about cold, I live near Tampa and it's been in the 20's at night. 21 Thursday early morning. I have empty feed bags blocking the hardware cloth windows.

Cetawin, 2 years ago Cyn snuck some Ameraucanas in my order, and I still have one cute sweet one named Valerie. I'm really attached to her.
