How is Lorelei doing?

Good morning, everyone. At first, he was at the back of the pen with his head in the corner. Guess he has a hard time getting revved up for his day just like I do sometimes. We brought his bowl of eggs and yogurt and my DH turned him forward to eat. Next thing I see is that Zane has positioned himself with one wing over that bowl, the other wing on the edge of the bowl of his pelleted feed to raise himself up a little and within head reach of his waterer. He has a system now, LOL. I think he's just tired of eggs and yogurt, so he's chowing down on his regular feed very well. He looked up at me and seemed to have a light in his eye today, didn't seem depressed at all, just eating his breakfast when I left him, pausing every few bites to take a sip of water.
As far as Lorelei, she's the same. She will come running when I shake the scratch can, then suddenly stops like she hurts and begins walking gingerly toward me. I always go get her. She gets the rest of whatever my broody Olivia doesn't eat every morning, trying to keep her weight up(Lorelei's weight, I mean). She's very thin and it happened almost overnight. I really think we're dealing with what killed Lacy, a reproductive thing, since it may be as much as three weeks since she's laid an egg and there isn't one "up the pipe" that we can feel.

Glad to hear that Zane had "light in his eyes" today! It sounds like he is trying to get better, which is wonderful! You go Zane!

Sorry about Lorelei though.

That's heartbreaking, Cyn.

Encouraging news! I think the sling thingy is a good idea, Cyn. If you can figure out a system that will balance his weight and let his legs hang down in the normal position it could help. Remember the "Jolly Jumper" that was around when we had kids? Not that Zane will be jumping, but if suspended just so, he could choose to put weight on his legs or not.

Very good news this morning

HenHaven got me to thinking...you and dh made incubators...hmmmm perhaps a tiny jolly jumper? Do you have something with tiny wheels around there? Something you could make up a sling for? Maybe with a long handle so you could push him around in the sun, etc?

I'm afraid Lorelei isn't long for this world. When everyone else had come to the coop at scratch call, she didn't. We looked for her and found her laying under a bush on the other side of the property from the coop and brought her back. She's so thin, I think she may be gone in a day or two. I made her oatmeal with buttermilk and yogurt and she ate it, but her weight is just a symptom of what's really wrong. I think she may have reproductive cancer. I'm ready to find her gone in the morning or if not then, in a day or two. That will be two of my three SLW hens gone from my original 10 girls.
