Hello.
One of my 4-month old White Leghorn pullets has started sprouting this growth on her beak. It's hard and seemingly made of beak material. Her beak and nostrils are otherwise properly formed, and she doesn't seem to have any problems breathing.
Has anyone else experienced these odd...
Yeah, I have that book, too, and it's hard to find anything in it! The growth is hard, like the beak, and it doesn't seem to be hurting her breathing. Guess I'll just keep an eye on it. May also post in the medical thread and see if anyone over there has any additional comment.
Thanks for the...

Has anyone else experienced these odd growths on their chickens?
Other than making her look like the wicked witch...
Rooster in the basement is a great idea! If I had a basement, I would definitely do that ... They're not banned here in Islip, but the boys can be noisy, so the basement would be a great solution.
Also ... thanks again to everyone for the condolences on Loretta yesterday. I especially...
Thanks so much for all the comments and condolences about Loretta. She wasn't the friendliest of my flock -- in fact, she was aggressive and mean to any new comers, but she was still a good bird who did what she was supposed to do, and was a member of our little tribe here. I'll miss her, and I...
Thanks ... Yeah, I opted for burial. I have a small dogwood tree I planted a couple seasons back that has always struggled. I put her under it ... maybe she'll bring it some growth.
Had my first chicken mortality yesterday. One of my Japanese Bantams, Loretta, took ill during the week. She showed the symptoms of having either some sort of crop/digestive system blockage, or possibly being eggbound: She was lethargic, a bit bloated, not laying, barely eating, drinking or...
Hey, all ... Hope everyone is doing well as the weekend rolls in!
Anyone around Long Island looking for a few chicks? I have a pair of Barred Rocks and a pair of Rhode Island Reds available ... according to the folks at Shirley Feed, where these chicks came from, they only ordered pullets, so...
The Barred Plymouth Rock chick is now a week-and-a-half old, and doing well ... wings have already feathered out, and the little sneak is using them to try to escape the brooder! It's managed to fly up to the rim of the 18" galvanized tub and perch there. I'm going to have to cover it today...
First of the five eggs in the incubator hatched today! He or she started breaking out when I was leaving for work this morning, and by the time I got home, had finished the job and was just about dried off and trying to hop around. Here's the little puff ball about 10 minutes ago, all dry and...
Hi, Roberta. I mentioned the hatching attempt in the photos from this past weekend ... here's the details:
It's one of those small incubators that fits 4-5 eggs. I noticed they actually have them at the Agway in Riverhead for about the same as I paid from Stromberg's (about 20 bucks). Figured...
This isn't a Town of Islip town-wide code, this is a regulation for a specific housing project in Central Islip -- the College Woods Town Houses. A lot of planned communities and housing complexes have restrictions like that which don't apply to the town as a whole.
Thanks, Roberta. Sorry to hear George isn't fitting in with your gang. I had hoped he'd do okay. If you find him a nice gal at Delmarva, I'm sure that's make a difference! Hmm ... wonder if I can get away that weekend. Guess that depends on how successful the March 9 hatch is ... If I get 4 or 5...
