I'm with SCG, never been able to break a broody. Last summer I had 5 in 2 nests. The other girls still managed to get in and lay. Half of the few eggs I did get got broken from them fighting over them!
I've read that you need to keep poults on wire for the first 6 weeks. Last year I got 7 poults. I ended up with 4, and 2 of them I just barely pulled through. I used a lot of Corid and Tylan.
I didn't know at the time they should be kept on wire floors. The 3 I lost were about 4 weeks old.
I have 2 questions I need help with
1) I had a turkey helper hatch (silkie) it looks like 2 loops of it's intestines are outside. Will they go back in by themselves? Do I need to do anything. If there's no hope, whats the best way to cull?
2) I have a turkey egg pipping. There's like...
I'm just the opposite! I have 6 turkey tutors and no turkeys! 1 Cochin, 3 Silkies and 2 EE's. 2 more Cochins about half zipped and another half dozen pipped.
Ok, my turkey hatched 2 of 3 of the EE eggs I left her have. We just rescued the chicks. That is why I didn't let her have the turkey eggs.
I have 1 mottled cochin hatched in the bator and about 8 more pipped. Nothing yet on the turkeys.
More tomato news:
If you do get a late or early frost. If you go out before sun up and hose the frost off the plants, they will be OK. My Great Uncle used to do this. He always put in a huge garden and the only thing he ate out of it was potatoes. But he loved to grow everything! He had...
OK, I started with 82 eggs I pulled 20 clear on day 18 (turkey count). I pulled another 8 when I went into lockdown. That leaves me with:
6 Turkey
6 from Jesse (barred olive eggers)
5 from Jim (Cuckoo Marans)
19 cochins
4 Seabrights
7 silkies
1 bantam olive egger
48 Total to lockdown.
Well, I guess mom knew best. He's no longer with us. I want to thank everyone for all of their help and support. He was the smallest when they were born, half the size of the largest. Yesterday he was half the size of the middle one. She is a good mom, she is taking very good care of the...
He's not eating hay or grains yet. We just disbudded his sibs tonight. I'm giving him cows milk. I haven't been able to get enough milk from either doe to give him.
I don't have a stanchion, I sort of pin her in a corner and hold her to let him nurse, usually with 2 or 3 legs off the ground so she can't move or kick. She gave him amoxicllin. I keep the other kids away when I try to feed him. I thought she would get rid of the doeling too, but she didn't...
My other goat had triplets Friday morning. Yesterday she quit feeding the littlest one (The one in the middle) and he's not taking to the bottle well, he has the beginnings of pneumonia. Doc says we will know whether he'll make it within 48 hours. To those of you who pray....
