Help! Not only are we being plagued by these tiny biting flies or midges....not sure what they are really....but the poor chickens are miserable as well. The temps have been very hot with no rain and little if any breeze. Some have found splice under the open sided hanger and the others have...
We were given 2 baby Muscovy ducks that we added to our chicken clan. I have to admit they have SO much more personality than chickens!! Up until about a month ago they were very tame and wanted us to rub their backs....we think they thought we were males that were going to "service" them. But...
I posted this in the duck forum as well....
Have had chickens for a few years and have become used to understanding their moods and if they get sick etc. We were given 2 female 10 day old ducklings 4 months ago and all has gone well. In fact I would have to say they are a lot more interesting...

No...none of our chickens are vacintaed. We have had very little problems and have successfully treated any that do arise.
Thanks for the replies. He looks healthy still this morning. We're keeping him isolated and will see what happens!

We have a 5 month old cock that was fine until this evening when he could not walk normally to the hen house. He will take 2-3 steps and stop and sit. Not on his feet but the on the whole leg...kind of squat walking. No obvious signs of any injury and his feet appear normal, his comb is bright...
HA! Thanks. Yes we keep wondering why we just don't give them the chop as they really are not contributing anything for their keep. But....they have a good life and allow they young girls a little breathing room from the cock and we figure just let them live it until they go.
Good to hear that...
I have been reading all the posts I can about breathing problems but nothing seems to fit. We were given 6 girls from a friend who had to move. After a bit we realized they were not very young....at all. No eggs to speak of from any of them except very large gnarled ones every once in a while...
Many thanks for your help...I'd like to do something for him tonight but all I have are antibiotic tablets for cats. Do you know if this would be a good idea? If yes, any advice on how to get the tablet down the cock's throat?!
We have a cock who is in the process of molting and has scaley leg mites, which we are treating (thanks for all the advice). Before the scaley mites were noticed he has had one eye swollen from the beak to the corner of the eye, and the eye looked "milky". We finally got a close look at it...
Ta....we currently have 4 large old girls that were given to us and seem at the end of their lives but the totter about quite happy. The other 2 are black Gascon hens and are medium size....actually about half the size of the 4 old girls. One of the blacks has 9 chicks trailer her. And we have...
I have built a coop 2.5m X 3m. Inside are 4 nesting boxes and roosting poles that could hold (if the dimensions in books are correct) about 20 chickens. But this seems like a lot of birds crowed into one space. I can stand up comfortably at the door end and it slopes to about shoulder height at...
"Does anyone here free-range chicks? (before they are big enough to lay... mine are a bit over 1 month old)"
Our chickens are all completely free range. We had 10 chicks hatch th 13th May and they have been out with mum since they were about 5-6 days old. We just left it to her to decide when...
