Our chickens still sneeze occasionally, we think it's cute When they were babies I used to say when they stretched and yawned it was because they were growing. Good luck with you chicks.
Baby chicks favorite game is putting bedding in the water. I can't imagine that eating newspaper could be good for them.
Personally I would stay with the pine bedding and try raising their water. We set the waterer on a piece of 2x4 and then
on a brick as they got bigger.
Congrats on your new family. I myself am still fairly new to chickens. We got our first brood in March 2013 and have really enjoyed the experience. We have had a few heartbreaks
but overall it"s been great. This year we hope to hatch a few babies under our broody hen.
When we first moved our chicks to their outside coop, we put a heat lamp and plenty of bedding to keep them warm. We allowed them in the run anytime it was warm outside, however we did have to put them back in at night the first couple weeks. Answering your questions will depend on the weather...
I have a 2 year old Buff Orpington that has gone broody several times and I would like to try letting her hatch a few chicks. I would like to pick up the eggs local if any one knows where I can. Also what is my window of opportunity once she goes broody? She has been on the nest for 5 days now.
Sorry it took a while to reply. What you see is the skin hanging down where it was torn away, not the crop. She is actually doing really well. She never slowed down, was eating and drinking normally the same day of the attack. The wound at her throat was about 4-5 inches long and a couple inches...
Doesn't sound like a great plan. The chickens won't appreciate being poo'd on. Also they like sunshine and being able to dust themselves, this plan doesn't lend itself to either. Check posts regarding secure coops for ideas on keeping your chickens safe and then build near the beagles.
Yeah we fixed the problem with the fence. The fox didn't get in, it grabbed her through the fence. The problem we have is finding a vet that treats chickens. So far she's doing good but has figured out how to get the bandage off.
Thanks for the response and the well wishes!
A few days ago two of our chickens were injured while inside their enclosure. We later got a picture on our game camera of a fox outside the pen and have since reinforced the fencing. My question is how to treat the wound on my Barred Rock, Princess. She was grabbed through the fence and the...
it is possible that the chickens are the culprits. It is my understanding that if they will eat eggs if they get a taste for them. Don"t know what your nest box design but you may need to rethink you nest box set up to make them more secure.
My chickens, now 15 months old, will call a warning when they feel threatened. They run into the bushes to hide and then when the danger has passed they begin to call to each other until they are back together. We only allow our chickens to free range when we are home, just in case....
Consider Buff Orpingtons. I have 2 and they are great layers also they are known for being cold hardy. They get heavy so that helps them stay warm. They are also quite pretty.
