    Are these both cockerels?

Thanks so much for your observations. They are both 8 weeks old. The EE is calm, and so beautiful - I didn't know you could sex the EE's by the coloring..... good to know. I'll try and get some better photos of the RIR this afternoon. Thanks everyone!

Questions about integrating 3 month olds

Hi all - I have 7, three month old chickens, who for the last week I've put in a sectioned off area in the chicken yard during the day so my existing 6, 3 year old hens can see them. I put the young ones back in the garage at night. What I'm wondering is - how long do I keep doing this -...

    Are these both cockerels?

Hi all - I would love your knowledge and assistance in helping me with these two young chickens. I have some 8 week old chickens - these two I am thinking are cockerels, but am hoping they aren't: Chicken #1 is an EE - we hatched on April 1st. I've never had an EE before, and are...

2 Week Old Chicks - Tail Feathers

Hi - I incubated some Australorp, EE's and SLW (eggs from My Pet Chicken) eggs, and they hatched a little over two weeks ago. The chicks are healthy, but I have some questions regarding possible roos or pullets. There are 6 Australorps - some of them still have "fuzzy butts", with very little...

    2 Week old Australorps

I incubated some Australorp, EE, and SLW eggs that I got from My Pet Chicken, which hatched on March 30th. They are 2 weeks old now. There is a significant size difference between the Australorps - some are much bigger than others - and the ones that are bigger have tail feathers already. The...

Just Hatched !!! - Power Failure Success

Hi all - We've had 6 out of 11 chicks hatch yesterday (Day 20), 3 more were zipping, and 2 had internally pipped. These eggs are ones that on Day 10, we lost power and I brought the eggs to bed with me for about 6 hours. One bit of warning - I did put a layer of cheesecloth down (to make it...

    Power Outtage

Ugh... I need some advice here. I am on Day 10, using a Hovabator 1588. All has been ok - I candled on Day 7 and saw some development on some of the eggs. We lost power last night around 1:00AM. None of my existing chickens are broody, and I didn't know what to do, so I put the 20 eggs into...

    Chicken Keeps Prolapsing

Hi all, I have an almost 2 year old Buff Polish. Fairly good layer. Last September, she prolapsed (not egg bound, but noticed blood streaks on her eggs the week coming up to when she did prolapse) - did warm sitz baths, applied some honey, kept her away from the other chickens - she healed...

    Millies - Sad...

Last Thursday, I bought from my feed store (who got their chicks from a reputable hatchery), 1 Millie, 1 Barred Rock and 1 Cochin. All were doing great, temperature was good. On Friday afternoon, the one Millie died (was fine 2 hours earlier - eating and drinking). I went back to the...

    Keeping Their Toes Clean?

Hi - I have some Mille Fleurs, and Cochins - they are less than one week old..... how do I keep their feathers on their toes clean? They step in poop, and have bits of chick mash smashed into them. I'm taking a warm slightly damp cloth and gently rubbing them off. Does it get better as they...

1 week old Buff Polish Not Well

I don't think so. The brooder is in the house and my friend was with her chicks all weekend, since her husband was out of town. I saw them on Saturday, and no pecking at all.

1 week old Buff Polish Not Well

Hi all - My friend has a one week old Buff Polish, purchased at a local feed store, but supplied from Ideal. She also purchased, she likes a Silkie at the same time. They were in a bin of "Assorted Cresteds". They were purchased as 1-day old's last Wednesday 4/9. Ate and drank well, and was...
