    feed for new chicks ?

Hello, Welcome to the beautiful world of chicks!! your local farmstore will have feed called, chick starter. Whichever type they have will be fine. Others may chime in about organic, medicated, non-medicated, booster vitamins, silky specific ideas, etc. Choose a style best suited for you...

    Roosters

Hello, If you do have more than one rooster, if one is a Welsummer, the other should be another Welsummer or one of a large breed. I had one each of Welsummer and Australorp roos who fought all the time. anything smaller than the Australorp would be injured or killed by a Wellsummer who...

    Bird netting over the run?

Yes, the bird netting will keep in the flock. I have plastic netting from TSC called deer netting which has 1 inch openings and is light weight which has kept out the hawks and kept the birds in. the two concerns are high winds which blow mine around as I have it across a 20' opening with...

Best way to transport new Roo

Hello, my take is that either way is fine for a 30 min ride home. Just be sure to leave openings for air and not to get too hot in the van if in a cardboard box. I have transported in box and the chickens settle down in the dark and do just fine. Good Luck!

    what breed for mystery chick?

I am posting this picture for help with breed. Sorry for only one picture, but it seems to be the only one which will upload. This apparently was my mystery chick as it is not one of the recognizable breeds which I ordered from Welp. As a chick it resembled the brown leghorns and the...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks for the rplies about broody wellies! So, it does appear to be unusual to have all three of mine exhibiting broodiness at once. My family is due to vacation soon, so I am going to try to break the broody hens. Failing that, I will let them have a few eggs to start while we are gone...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hello, I have a question about my welsummer pullets. I hope that a question about becoming broody is appropriate for this thread. My three welsummers, who were hatched 15 September 2010, are all acting broody--two more so than the third. But all three are sitting in the nest boxes on eggs of...

    EEEk! Price increase @ TSC

Just yesterday I was in TSC and checked the feed prices in Anderson, SC. Layena layer pellets 50# was up to $14.69 and Dumor brand was $13.29 or $13.49 (cn't remember which). My local feed store in Iva, SC still sells Bartlett layer pellets 2 50# for about $25. So feed prices appear to be...

    Ordering unsexed chicks

Yes, If one wants a set amount of egg production, one should definitely order sexed pullets. Even with good odds and luck, the set amount of eggs may not be achieved. I ordered from Welp this September with good fortune. Of 25 sexed pullets, only one looks to be a roo. Of the 5 assorted...

    Garden and run co-design

HolaChicka, that is a novel idea. thanks for posting your plans. One other plan that caught my attention last spring was the idea of a central coop and garden shed building with a large fenced area on each side. One side will be a garden area and the other a run. then at the end of the...
