The Easter Egger is not really a breed. They are relationed to the breeds Ameraucanas and Araucanas, then bred with many different breeds so they no longer fit either breed's standards. They usually have muffs and pea combs, but come in nearly every variety and color, some even have ear tufts or are rumpless. Each EE is different, but overall they are usually a smaller bird that lays pink, green, or blue eggs. They are normally friendly and calm, and their colorful eggs make them a popular choice in backyard flocks.

I feel bad that I have to give this chicken a 3-star.....
Pros: Cute fluffy cheeks, pretty eggs, small comb
Cons: Super skittish, not afraid to stand their ground
On all websites I've visited says that easter eggers are one of the sweetest chicken breeds you can get. Yes, that can be true....But all chicken's personalities vary! I can barely get close to my easter egger, she startles when I make the slightest movement. She is not afraid to stand up for herself. She will fight. She fights with a hen that is twice the size as her. On the other hand, she lays pretty eggs and her face is cute. She only has 2 friends in my entire flock, they were in the same batch. She only really hangs out with the chickens her age. She has a very weird laying time, will lay all throughout summer, and after Winter she starts back up again very early, about February.

One of my very favorites!
Pros: Good layers, lay large pretty eggs, generally very healthy, cold hardy, heat tolerant, small for a standard chicken, so many colors!
Cons: They can fly high and tend to wander, can be skittish, often mislabeled
Easter Eggers are one of my very favorite chickens. I've found them to be the healthiest chickens I've raised and they live a long time. They lay lots of large and jumbo eggs and continue to lay a decent amount when they're older. Because they are mixes you never know what color you are going to get or if they'll have beards or not or what color eggs they are going to lay which is exciting to me. You can usually easily tell individuals apart too. They are on the small side for a standard chicken so they probably don't eat as much as, say, a dual purpose breed, but their size and weight allow them to fly quite well which can be a problem if you're trying to keep them within a fenced area or catch them.

Cons: A bit smelly
Always jumping out of brooder because why wouldn't they
Easter Eggers are one of my favorite breeds, and I wanted to get them for a while. I got 3 chicks a week ago, and I absolutely love them! Very sweet and adventurous. Would recommend to a first time chicken owner.

Yes, that's one of them. It's Hawk (Hawk Eyes) she looks like a hawk even more now. She chitters a sort of cluck when I hold her but Chitchat, her almost twin, just talks my ears off.

well, all EE's are different. thats just her personality. not all EE's are like that ;)

My EEs have each flown over the fence 1 or 2 times. They seemed happy to get back in with the rest of the flock and haven't flown out again, although they routinely fly to the top of the coop. If it continued to be a problem I would clip their wings.

We have clipped one wing, then both. She just does a leap up to the top of the 4 foot fence, walks the top and bails off. I guess 12 times in the last month. When I go to get her she runs, no longer falls for the sunflower seeds trick, or getting trapped in the fence corner. I will snatch her her off the roost tonight and trim the wings again.
Last night I tried to get them all in the run before a thunderstorm. Not Koala.... not even for rolled oats. When the others were going in the coop at dark she finally changed her mind.

I have EEs too and they are really all quite different in personality -- all very smart, which can sometimes be annoying when they want to play and I'm in a hurry. I'm probably too new to be giving advice, but my understanding is that if you want to keep them from flying you only clip one wing to throw them off balance. Clipping two allows them to fly again -- or so I've heard. Sounds like she's a bit overly adventurous I -- in any case, I wish you luck with your girl.

A 4 feet tall fence isn't very tall. All of my chickens would hop over that. My leghorns go over the 6 feet fence. That's like getting mad at a dog for breaking a piece of string while walking him :)

I have noticed the same thing with EE the prettier ones usaually aren't as friendly but this year the ugliest one we have is the my skittish and she pecks but this one really cute one Named Caramel is my baby she flys on my sholder all the time and sits in my lap and the second Ugliest one whos name is Scarlet sits in my lap

I've got two EEs and one is suffering terribly with the heat this summer---pants constantly and actually got sick for a few days. My other hens are managing fine, but the brown and red EE struggles. She's sweet, but my friendliest hen is a little black sex link.

I'm not sure you can judge the breed by one bird that doesn't want to go back in the coop! I think a little training with treats might get her to be more cooperative with "Geez, I REALLY don't have time right now." returning to the coop.

Which hatchery? It would be interesting to see if there are any clear "this breed is like this" differences between sources. I have 2 from Ideal, 7 weeks old. One is clearly friendlier than the other and the same is true of the 2 Black Astralorps and the 2 Partridge Chanteclers. All came to the P.O. in the same box, raised together in the same bathtub. Just individual personalities.

i have never in my life come accross an easter egger! ? i live in ireland , are they american? over here we have rir hybrids , who are friendly happy great laying beautiful quite commen and cheap birds , but never heard of an easter egger til i joined this

I'm not an expert by any means, but I believe they are a mix of the breed Araucana and ...pretty much anything else. I was told this by people who know much more than I do! So, they have cheek muffs, feathery feet (maybe not always), and lay colored eggs like blue, green, olive... I don't know if they are mostly here in the U.S.

I should mention that the two birds in the foreground of my avatar picture are Easter-Eggers. :)

Funny how different we are in what we find attractive. I love the pea comb and the fact that they can look like hawks, which I find to be beautiful birds. They're only "menacing" if I've got little chicks outside, but I'm such a mother hen type, nothing can get my babies!!!
Sad story about culling your roo for the wrong reasons, but at least he got to go to chicken heaven and get some rest!!! :)
Sorry about the loss of the others after his departure.

At 21 weeks she has become more tolerable now that she squats. We can pick her up sometimes. .She still get on the fence but has been more closly supervised. Now, how about paying the rent with some green eggs?

I agree coffeekittie - they are so much more attractive than I had thought. Maybe by viewing them online, you don't get to see them individually?

Hi blacktailsmom,
Yes, exactly. I had only seen pictures of them, and though they didn't look like chickens are "supposed" to look, lol. Now I see their funny, muffed little faces and have to smile. Such lovely colored eggs, too.

You will get more responses if you post this in the "what breed or gender is this" thread.

In my opinion they look like they could be easter eggers because they appear to have green legs, they both look like cockerels to me based on their color, especially the one on the left. If it's possible to post another pic of both birds it will help, or at least a pic of the one on the right 'cause it's kind of hard to see int his pic.
