Wow it has been FOREVER since I've been on BYC!
How has everyone been???
What are all of your guys' views on trimming for fertility? I've got some chocolate Orps I'm planning on hatching chicks from but they have a ton of poof in their trunk . I mean so much I wouldn't be surprised if none...
We currently currently have 10 hens and a rooster in that coop. Theoretically it can hold up to 18-24 if you go by the 3-4 hens per nesting box rule. I thought 11 was a lot until I've actually put the hens in it. Now when they roost there is so much extra space! I could easily fit more hens in...
Its been a while since I've posted! So much has happened in the past few weeks
New coop, tons of school, both parents getting surgery. I've been busy! So be prepare yourselves for the storm of pictures
Its a beautiful fall day outside! I love how I can just let the chickens and the goats...
We have fake eggs in there with some gold balls and I keep going in the coop, finding the fake eggs and golf balls all the way on the other side of the coop.. If they were given the option to free range (we haven't yet because we haven't had them too long) would they maybe not eat the eggs...
I guess Dutchbunny had her stroke during my spell away from BYC! I hope she recovers soon!!! In my prayers.
@jtbass2756 Still at my dads so I don't have a picture of the new coop yet, will have to post one when I get back to my moms. And the mustard eggs did absolutely NOTHING. The new girls...
I just realized how long its been since I was on last. Welcome everyone who is knew and hey again everyone else.
Sometime in the past two to three weeks everyone is wanting our eggs! Our girls can't keep up!! So my mom and I managed to get our hands on some welsummers. 6 Hens and a Rooster...
We aren't looking for show stock. Just awesome little brahmas! However I conveniently have a Japanese bantam hen thats gone broody. I might find some brahma hatching eggs (may get some from a hatchery, if I can't find someone else) and let her do everything. As long as the chicks don't end up...
Not entirely sure how to make them molt on command (would be fun). Like you snap your fingers and bam! Poof of feathers lol.
I've noticed that my hens seem to molt after they hatch eggs.. Won't help, your situation, but its something I noticed. I'm sure theres some secret out there
Does anyone by any chance have any Brahma pullets or laying hens they are willing to part with? Mom wants some again every since we lost our Dark Brahma pullet.
She says she prefers Dark Brahmas, but I'm sure she wouldn't be able to resist another color if they were available. No more room...
Hey guys I'm new to this thread. My mom is wanting some Brahmas :) We had a Dark Brahma before but the day after she layed her first egg something got her and broke her wing. She ended up dying of some sort of infection... :(
However, we are looking for some Brahmas again My mom loves the...
You'll be able to tell who is who after they get a little bit older. The Brown Leghorns will have white earlobes and the welsummers will have red earlobes. Thats about the only way to tell the difference between the two lol. I agree with @aart that Ella Mae looks Cockerel-ish. But if she is a...
Our girls layer dark eggs right away, but I have read somewhere that their eggs can get a little darker with time. Maybe she's still just figuring it out
Found the perfect thread for me!!!!!!!!!!!
We've got two Welsummer hens, but also got some chicks from a friend about a month ago. Out of the bunch we have two cockerels and eight little pullets!
Red Star: RIR X Delware. RIR X White Leghorn. RIR X Rhode Island White. Production Red X Deleware
Black Star: New Hampshire Red X Barred Rock. Rhode Island Red X Barred Rock
These hybrids are all based off of RIR or New Hampshire too. These hybrids are suppose to be excellent for eggs and are...
Does anyone here have any experience with Red or Black stars? Or Golden comets? I've heard a ton of how they are extremely great layers. I currently have one black star pullet that we rescued from the feed mill with splay leg when she was a chick. I'm curious and excited to see how she will lay.
I let the young pullets out for the first time today! They are having a blast. I also left our Buff Orpington Broody hen out with her two little bantam chicks. Out of the 10 eggs I gave her, only three successfully hatched, and then one chick died at about 2 weeks. So none the less she showed...
This is by far my favorite picture of my favorite Wellie and our Big Blue Roo in the background!
Our RIR hen had no idea what to think of our NC snow this year
Thank you guys! That cleared up what I was confused about
Oh and @Hollowoakfarm I've figured out that only 2 out of the 10 chicks we got from you are cockerels! Mom is ecstatic we managed to get 8 pullets from the bunch. She was terrified she just grabbed roosters.
