I've created a new group on Facenbook for the Massachusetts/New England Chapter and wanted to share it. So many times I've wanted to go away and I have to stay home because of my flock. Recently a person that was watching my flock, didn't come over as I had hoped and they were almost out of...
I always see people posting silly photos of their chickens eating spaghetti, seriously hilarious stuff, but I hestitated to use it, as I thought maybe they'd choke on the longer noodles. I began a search for smaller sized noodles for them to eat. It took a while, I thought of macaroni, and...
I received a case of oranges as a Christmas gift and wondered if I can give them to my birds. I know they need calcium for the eggs, but do they need vitamin C? Will it hurt them to give it to them? Pros/cons?
I expected eggs in October from my 3 babies, who were born in May. I got them at 2 days old. I waited almost 2 months and FINALLY the Amerucana laid her first blue egg followed the next day by a white egg from my California White.
Just waiting for a chocolate egg from my Welsummer now.Not sure...
Hi curious what the best proteins are for molting chickens. One of my girls is in a bad molt, I have been feeding them blocks of tofu, but is there a better protein?
I have 5 yr olds and I bought 3 chicks in the spring to give me a nice variety of egg colors and now they are about to lay themselves and I added them into the big coop and the 5 are having none of it. When in the run they beat them up so bad they bleed and when up in the coop they stuff the 3...
Hi everyone,
Curious about your methods for selling chicken poop? Do you just sell it raw, or do you add stuff to it? I've had several requests as spring approaches about getting some for their gardens. What do you charge?
thanks!
This has been such a crazy winter, first zero+ freezing weather, and now Blizzard "Nemo" I don't think all the prep in the world would have helped here. The winds blew so hard last night, under the eaves where we have vents, snow got into the coop. The run is got drifts from any and all nooks...

Looking for ONE Black Copper Marans chick or adult female, in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, or Upper Connecticut. (Quiet Corner area, Woodstock, Putman etc) I am in the Blackstone Valley, and can travel to pick up if needed. Just wish to add her to my flock of hens.
Do not want a...
The other day I notice Flower has quite a poopy butt, so I took her inside put a trash bag in the bottom of the sink, filled it with warm water and washed her off. She was really good and didn't complain at all. She proceeded to go straight to the nesting box and laid an egg shortly after.
Do...
Hi, What are the signs? My girls have a greyish tint on the tips of their combs, is this frostbite? They seem otherwise healthy and not going through molt or anything?
thanks for any advice
( I tried to get a photo but they wouldn't sit still)
This morning to my shock I opened up the coop and found my Betsy my Rhode Island Red dead inside.
No apparent reason, and all the other girls seem ok. Poor girl :(
Long May you bawk
Hi,
I have questions.
I have my 6 hens which I love dearly and they have been a joy in my life. My goal was just to raise them for eggs and life goes on. Chicken math predicts I want more.
So I have been thinking of raising a heritage pair of Chickens.
Probably Black Copper Marans. I...
Hi,
As the days get shorter, we are putting a light in the coop to keep the girls on a schedule for egg production. My husband has the timer on so they stay up till 9pm, but I think they should wake up early instead about 4am, and then have it go off when the sun comes up...any school of...
Being fall I thought it be fun to get a small pumpkin and see how they react to it. I cut off the top and put it in the coop, and they all jumped on it and within an hour they had it all eaten inside. Fall is fun! :)
It's Chicken Inspection day here, and the nice poultry inspector named Ed from Boston MA came out and banded and took a blood sample. The best thing is it is free! Yes FREE. He sat and looked at each chicken and then took a blood sample from under their wing.
We chatted about selling eggs and...
Hi,
I have 2 barred rocks, 2 RIR and 2 black stars and they just started laying eggs and they should all be brown eggs layers. The eggs being laid are very pale. I know they start small and get bigger, but do they also get darker?
thanks!
