    Egg drop off

The egg shells are pretty stout as is so far. I'm not totally sure if they're molting, I haven't noticed extra feathers laying about. Shouldn't be stressed, I don't think. Nothing has changed. I think we're leaning towards no light. Give them an honest good life, I know I hate being woke up to...

    Egg drop off

Well I just talked to a guy at the feed store. He says its probably due to weather as the days are starting to get shorter. My question now is, Light or No Light? And why?

    Egg drop off

I have 3 BR's about 6 months old. For the last few weeks we were getting an egg everyday and maybe 2 every other day or so. But for the last week it has dropped off, I think we've gotten 1 every other day. All 3 are behaving normally, could it be I'm not giving a calcium supplement? I feed...

Putting the girls in at night

Tonight went much easier. I was hangin with them in the run trying to shoo one of them up the ladder. I could tell they were getting anxious. Got one in there but she wasn't interested. She started looking around and another girl followed and then the third. So I tacked up the material...

First day of the rest of their lives

When my chicks were inside in a box they didn't know what to do with a worm but they sure loved those squirmy rolly pollies!

Putting the girls in at night

Well I dunno, I just put them in there and tacked up some cloth over the opening. They freaked, I'm sure they'll get over it

Putting the girls in at night

At what time do chickens tend to go in for the night. Currently the sun has set but of course is still light out. I think I will lock them in when it is time for bed. And is it ok without food and water? I read they have terrible night vision and wouldn't bother with it anyways.

First day of the rest of their lives

Set the girls in their coop today. They're loving it! Apparently I need a roosting setup in the run.

    Prepare the coop

Is there something I should do in preparation of their move to the coop? Dust with DE? I read it's a good idea to block off the nesting boxes for now. I am gonna paint the inside still

    BR, roo or hen?

Pure? The one on the left, it's tail feathers are noticeably longer but blunt on the ends. I thought I read somewhere they would be pointed if Roo.

    Backyard outing

And further more, I had an infrared thermometer and noticed last week my chicks were @ 90*. I just checked on them and they are huddled together, minus the blonde one. They had a blast outside. Took them a couple minutes before their instincts to start kicking in! All the sounds and my...

    Backyard outing

We took the girls out today, yep all 4, lol! theyre about 4 1/2 weeks old and well feathered. Is now a good time to cut the heat lamp? All last week it's been about 80 in their box. House temp never goes below @ 65*.
