Maybe it's just me, but when I hard boil fresh eggs, I have the hardest time peeling them....I end up mauling the egg. The shells stick to the egg and the white flakes off. When I'm done, I end up about 1/2 of the egg.
Is it the way I'm boiling them that makes the eggs so hard to peel?

She's on a regular diet of layer pellets, and I mix in some crushed oyster shell.
We give all 3 of our hens (the other two are production reds) leftover bread crusts, fruit, and other appropriate scraps (cornbread, cantaloupe, cucumber). We also let the hens roam our yard for a couple of...
Skunks are all around my neighborhood in San Antonio, TX. Two skunks got into my coop and killed 3 pullets a year ago....and my dumb mutt has been skunked literally around 12 times... Arrrrgh!
Sorry, but I don't have any photos of Lily/Larry. He's been handled just about every day and is very friendly. We'll be sorry to see him go, but we can't have roosters in the city limits....
Any takers?
Lily/Larry is very tame as my kids are always picking him up.
Surely somebody in the San Antonio area would want this fine example of a RIR.
Anybody?
Hi, all.
Our favorite chicken named Lily turned out to be a Larry. He crowed this AM for the first time, all the while we've been waiting for eggs! If you live near San Antonio, TX, and want a beautiful Rhode Island Red rooster he's yours for $10.
Thanks.
Update: As of Friday morning...
Hmmm...this happened to someone we know. She used to carry her rooster around under her arm and she developed red, itchy whelps. She went to the Dr. and he said that mites from her rooster had caused the whelps. Of course, every case is different, but your case sounds similar to our friend's.
My mutt has been skunked literally 10 - 12 times over the last 3 years, and the 1 qt Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup Baking Soda, 1 teaspoon Liquid Hand Soap solution mentioned by Ginger Chic works great for getting rid of the stink. My wife and I learned of this solution a couple of years ago and...
I agree w/ pimpdaddywrinkles...it was a skunk. I had TWO skunks get into my coop at the same time...they killed two of my reds and wounded one (who later died).
I actually had to open the door to my coop and let the skunks out, so I know it was skunks and not coons or some other creature...
My guess is that it was an owl...they can make some crazy, strange sounds.
And, remember, they don't call screech owls that for nothing.
Here's a link to Cornell University's bird page on Eastern screech owls...it even has a link to hear the sound they make...
Oh, yeah, skunks do indeed kill chickens. Two skunks killed 3 of my rhode island reds a few weeks ago. I've since taken better steps to keep the skunks out and they haven't messed with my hens again.
Guess I'll just have to build a fortress to keep the skunks out.
Thanks, everyone, for your help.
Hopefully any future posts of mine will deal w/ happier topics.
